Christie Under Investigation for Another Bridge Closing

(Newser) – Apparently Chris Christie has a problem with bridges. Federal prosecutors' investigation into the George Washington Bridge scandal has now widened to include several other bridge closings, the New York Times reports. So far they're focused primarily on repairs to the Pulaski Skyway, and while the allegations aren't nearly as sensational as the allegedly politically-motivated George Washington Bridge closing, they still could lead to felony charges. Christie's administration is accused of pressuring the Port Authority into paying for the Skyway's repairs, even announcing that it would do so before an agreement had been reached.

That's a problem because the Skyway is operated by New Jersey, and hence outside the Port Authority's mandate. But it leads to the Lincoln Tunnel, so the Port Authority listed the repairs in bond documents as "Lincoln Tunnel Access Infrastructure Improvements." If prosecutors can prove that was intentionally misleading to bond holders, they can file felony charges under New York's Martin Act. Prosecutors are also in the early stages of investigating the closures of other bridges, including the Goethals and Bayonne bridges, though the details in those cases remain murky.

But it's not all bad news for Christie today; a new Iowa poll shows that he's made up 5 points in a hypothetical matchup against Hillary Clinton, though he still trails the Democrat 44-36, Politico reports.

It DID seem to neat and easy...

A simple message “time for some traffic problems” and they all KNEW what that meant, and what they were supposed to do...

That wouldn’t be the bridge in his mouth would it???

If so — then it needs to be closed.

And when will Obama be investigated for closing open air memorials?

Oh wait ... he doesn’t have an R next to his name. Silly me.

Don’t think that the GOP is not part of the plan to torpedo Christie. They want JEB! as the next president and will undercut all other potential candidates. Just watch.

Christie is on my short list of "absolutely will not vote Republican" if he's on the ticket, but this whole bridge closing crap is just a liberal feeding frenzy.

They have no evidence that he had prior knowledge on the GWB closing. And this appears to me an attempt to criminalize budget negotiations between interstate agencies.

The Pulaski Skyway does lead to the Holland Tunnel which is run by the PA of NY/NJ - it would be the governor's job to get the PA to kick in as significant portion of the money as possible.

The claim that these negotiations "still could lead to felony charges" is absurd and is just put in there to give leftists little scandal woodies. Don't participate.

Be careful about that. It looks like his surgery has worked since he's lost about 100 lb. and it shows. On that point I give him a lot of credit.

For his sake and that of his family, I hope and pray he is successful in taking off the weight. He still seems morbidly obese.

Yes, it was meant as a dumbass childish prank, by mental teenagers drunk on government power. There are thousands of little pissant government workers across the country who flex their little tyrant muscles for their own enjoyment. The closed three of 12 toll lanes because the could and they thought it would be funny.

If there is evidence that Christie had foreknowledge, where is it? All I ever hear from lefties is "of course he knew!" or "you know he knew!" or "how could he not know!".

Without proof of foreknowledge on his part, your position that you "just know he knew" is emotion-based.

The PA can pay for access infrastructure for the Lincoln Tunnel but not the Holland Tunnel, since it predates the creation of the PA. Christie says that improved Holland-Pulaski access diverts some traffic from the Lincoln Tunnel, and thus should qualify as a Lincoln improvement.

Thanks for that clarification.

Clearly easier access to the Holland relieves pressure on the congestion at the Lincoln.

But even if it didn't, for the NY Times to imply that Christie's position in the negotiations could lead to "felony charges" is absolutely 100% absurd on its face. Utter nonsense.

The suit is full of hypocrite’s nonsense.

I am sure the arrangements regarding the Pulaski Skyway - a long land and sea bridge (over a mixture of water ways, roads & rails) is not the only or the first instance in which the understanding of the uses of Port Authority finances was interpreted to include facilities in New York & New Jersey not owned and directly operated by the Port Authority.

The entire regime of the Port Authority needs to be closed down and all its assets sold, independently, to private interests - airports, sea ports, rails, tunnels & bridges, and markets NOT unaccountable regulatory fiat of a “Port Authority” allowed to determine the costs to users for the facilities. As it is now, the auto & truck bridge & tunnel tolls for the Port Authority run bridges and tunnels are set as high as they are NOT to accomplish operations and maintenance goals of those facilities but to help the Port Authority pay its huge debt financing costs left from other Port Authority ventures like the former WTC.
