The Department of Homeland Security want to use a facility that was formerly nursing home to house illegal immigrant children in the city of Escondido, San Diego County, California.

There is a meeting tonight of the Escondido Planning Commission to approve rezoning the facility for this new use.

Kitty Demry, who lives about a one-third of a mile from the proposed facility said, “We want our City Council and the Planning Commission to push back to the federal government and adhere to the laws." We don’t want an organization housed in our community with a huge number of uncertainties.

Right on, Kitty. They should begin with a transparent and open process that includes the community and the local elected officials every step of the way and ensures compliance with all local, state and federal laws — including local zoning ordinances.
