On Thursday, Kirtland Air Force Base will host an event that just three years ago could have cost many airmen their careers the first-ever Team Kirtland LGBT Pride Picnic.
The significance of this event is, for me, the normalization of us (the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community) as part of the Air Force community, said David Hardy, the civilian director of the Air Force Research Laboratorys Directed Energy Directorate at Kirtland and head of the events coordinating committee.
I like seeing that, finally, openly, it is recognized that the LGBT community is part of the Air Force family.
Hardy, who has been openly gay for decades, said his homosexuality has never been an issue in his professional career.
Although the Defense Department has supported gay pride events since 2012, it wasnt until this year that Air Force officials directed Kirtland and other bases to add Pride Month to the existing list of seven special observances, which range from Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to a Holocaust Remembrance.
This event will now be included in our normal cycle of yearly celebrations of the ethnic and other diversity elements of our population here on base, Hardy said.

No mater what they say, they are not normal and never will be.
This genie will never be stuffed back into the bottle. We've opened Pandora's box and nothing can close it...short of a revolution and succession.
Thank goodness they can’t reproduce. ;-)
elimination of the don’t ask don’t tell was a MAJOR disaster for this country...pathetic.
Hubby works out there (20 year vet, now Civ. Svc.) and said so far no one is being voluntold to show up.
I have a buddy who works there (Boeing) and he told me the same thing.
Any Christian Pride Parades? Straight Pride?
Any Christian Pride Parades? Straight Pride?
Maybe some Christians will get up the gumption to have one.
I am a contractor at Hanscom AFB in Mass. We have been having this crap shoved in our faces for a couple months. All June, posters go up on the doors and posters get ripped down. We vets are sick of this perversion!
Good for you in standing up. Have you been ordered to attend anything? (Call in sick).
Any Christian Pride Parades? Straight Pride?
Why haven’t any been organized? Why not?
First time I’ve ever had sympathy for Muslims.
What if they had to cancel due to lack of interest?
There are a lot of Muslim homos.
The queers used to say “we just want to be treated like everyone else”. They lie. They want special treatment all the time.
They should not have a “gay” picnic anymore than midgets who work at the base should have one. Nor should there be a Phd picnic. Nor a Hispanic picnic. Nor an AA picnic. Nor a Jewish, Baptist, Muslim, yada yada picnic.
Employee events are for everyone or for no one.
I don’t think the primary purpose of these events is to celebrate the depravity. I suspect it is to observe and identify i.e. “out” those who are rightfully repulsed.
Not having enough success with a spoonful of sugar, the PTB and their helpful political officers are cramming the poison down people’s throats to find out who will refuse to swallow the homophile pills.
I am officially removing myself from the rolls of Air Force Veterans. This is disgusting. We did not fight wars and defend this nation to turn it over to the perverts.........
PRIDE???!!! WTF do they have to be PROUD about?
Woo Hoo!
Thanks for the ping, Dave.
I have just enough time to dig out my rainbow tie died shirt and ‘assless’ black leather chaps and head out!
