California clamps down on federal immigration detention requests

(Reuters) - California's attorney general warned police departments statewide on Wednesday that it is generally illegal for them to honor immigration detention requests from the federal government unless the detainee has a criminal history of serious or violent offenses.

The directive by Attorney General Kamala Harris cited the recent enactment of a state law dubbed the Trust Act in outlining new limits on California's compliance with a federal program that has helped deport hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants. -SNIP- In December 2012, Harris issued a directive making clear that it was strictly voluntary for local police to honor federal immigration "detainers."

The latest directive goes further, warning that keeping detainees in local police custody on the basis of a federal immigration enforcement request alone was in most cases a violation of the California TRUST Act.

That law forbids police and sheriffs from keeping individuals detained under ICE requests in most cases unless the person has a history of serious or violent crimes, federal charges or is a registered sex offender or arsonist.

Several California cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, have adopted their own local prohibitions against complying with federal immigration detention requests.

How can it be “illegal” for a state, county or local government employee to comply with a Federal law?

And the more money California spends, the more of a federal discount California tax payers get due to deductions for state and local taxes.

Real estate also does well, and with the mortgage interest deduction the Feds help real estate grow along with the population of new immigrants.

Oh, and because capital gains are taxed lower than regular income taxes, California has plenty of Silicon Valley millionaires that will get the rest of the country to pay for any national burdens these immigrants create.

For a state that's full of tax-increasing Democrats, they sure know how to game the tax code!

And Republicans will continue to let them get away with it.

It’s not. There’s a little thing called the “supremacy clause” in the U.S. Constitution.

Yes,I know.I was making a subtle reference to that (perhaps *too* subtle). That's why those dopeheads in Colorado don't realize that they can be detained by the FBI when they're found to be in possession of,or,worse still, found to be distributing even the smallest quantity of weed.
