Study: All Employment Growth Since 2000 Went To Immigrants

According to a major new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), net employment growth in the United States since 2000 has gone entirely to immigrants, legal and illegal. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CIS scholars Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler found that there were 127,000 fewer working-age natives holding a job in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000, while the number of immigrants with a job was 5.7 million above the 2000 level.
The rapidity with which immigrants recovered from the Great Recession, as well as the fact that they held a disproportionate share of jobs relative to their share of population growth before the recession, help to explain their findings, the authors report. In addition, native-born Americans and immigrants were affected differently by the recession.
Other significant findings include:
•Because the native-born population grew significantly, but the number working actually fell, there were 17 million more working-age natives not working in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000.
•The share of natives working or looking for work, referred to as labor force participation, shows the same decline as the employment rate. In fact, labor force participation has continued to decline for working-age natives even after the jobs recovery began in 2010.
•Immigrants have made gains across the labor market, including lower-skilled jobs such as maintenance, construction, and food service; middle-skilled jobs like office support and health care support; and higher-skilled jobs, including management, computers, and health care practitioners.
•The supply of potential workers is enormous: 8.7 million native college graduates are not working, as are 17 million with some college, and 25.3 million with no more than a high school education.

Would E-Verify help solve this problem?
I am not a fan of E-Verify because it is an administrative burden on business. It is only necessary because the FedGov refuses to enforce immigration laws. But it may be the only arrow in the quiver.
What would happen if people would only do business with companies that E-Verify? It may take awhile to have an effect because E-Verify is only used by 1-2% of businesses.
It is virtually non-existent in the landscape business, for example. Check for yourself. Go to NumbersUSA and see if you can find a landscape business that uses it. I can’t. But if enough people ask before they hire maybe a landscape will figure out using E-Verify is good for getting new business.
Clearly what would help solve this problem is AMNESTY!
Our betters in congress like Juan McCain, Miss Lindsay Grahamnesty, and John Boner keep telling us that. If only we’d listen to them.
It’s just another example of how the people in DC are pretty much always wrong. About everything.
No surprise. For years, since there has been practically no enforcement of immigration law, and legal immigration has been at 1,000,000+ per year. Employers in more and more industries have made a habit of hiring illegal aliens in lower skilled jobs, and H1B’s in many higher skill jobs: construction, agriculture, manufacturing, fast food, all computer fields and many others.
This is nothing more or less than an effort by major employers to flood the labor market to hold down and even reduce compensation for employees, and they’ve had complete cooperation from our executive and most of our legislative branch of the federal government for years.
E-verify is an important subject. With every day, every hour, we have more foreigners crossing our border and taking jobs away from the people who are citizens. It will only get harder and harder for a Republican president to reverse the job market.
Americans should insist that the firms they deal with have conformed to the rules of E-verify. Keep pushing it, blam.
Ask your contractor if he employs people who do not speak English. Ask your landscaping company the same question. The consumer is the one paying the illegal workers in this country by not insisting on legal labor.
It sounds like its’ time not only stop illegal immigration but scale back legal immigraiton too until native Americans can catch up and getting newly created jobs. It is insane and a policy of self-suicide to harm Americans at the expense of immigrants. With the left, life is always a zero sum game and our leftist immigration policy illustrates that in spades.

I would think businesses would want to prove citizenship anyway, but what does E-Verify take, a db search or something more involved?
