Schubert: Octet in F, D. 803, fifth movementThis minuet is in the same format as the scherzo, but its slower and less high-spirited. Its marked simply allegretto.

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
MONDAY, JULY 7, 8 PM PDT
Schubert: Octet in F, D. 803, sixth movementThis finale is in sonata format and is marked andante molto for the introduction and allegro for the main body of the movement.
Now all hell breaks loose. After such beautiful and sensible music, the storm clouds arrive, a chill wind blows, and lightning and thunder rend the air. The audience in Ferdinand Troyers backyard must have looked at each other askance in confusion and alarm. What the hells going on? Whats he doing? must have been the sentiment. But Frannie was only pulling their ahem! legs. After a short cloudburst, the clouds part, the sun comes out, and at 1:45, its play time!
The first subject is a joyous theme in F Major. At 3:02, the second subject appears in C Major, but Frannie jumps quickly into the development in the remote key of A-flat at 4:14.
The development leads into the recapitulation at 5:43 with the buoyant return of the first subject. The second subject appears in the correct key of F Major. But the sun suddenly goes dim as the clouds return with the introductory material. This time you know that Schubert is just messing with you. Its not real.
With an allegro molto flourish, the coda ends the octet with a fast restatement of the first subject and a killer ending.
