They did that, it did happen again, so they quietly fired his dumb ass. Then he made it unquiet. This modern age of people running to the press and the internet every time they do something stupid has really gotten annoying. It’s the most basic way reality is supposed to work, break the rules, face the consequences. Don’t give away food is a basic rule of restaurants, but this guy figured out that because he’s old and a veteran and he gave it to a homeless guy the sympathy of the masses would cut everybody’s IQ in half and they’d all take his side. Even though he’s a moron giving away stuff that doesn’t belong to him in violation of clear rules and drawing homeless people to the restaurant like stray dogs. He should have been fired after the first offense, forget trying to be nice, he’s old enough to know better. Apparently old enough to spot a playable system.

Perfect summary of events.

I too find it annoying that any petty grievance against a company can be posted to the Internet and potentially go viral. Even online reviews can be very powerful. Just one or two bad reviews on a restaurant in Yelp can potentially take that restaurant out of business, even if they are doing a good job and satisfying the needs of the other 99% of their customers.

However these are the times we live in and we must adapt to them. Many companies (mine included) are hiring "social media" directors who will assemble a team to monitor and respond to anything that pops up on the Internet that might be detrimental to the company's reputation.

Accordingly, many personnel matters now need to be handled in a manner that would minimize the chances of a disgruntled employee going to the media or internet to "tell their story." In fact, employees who are separating from us are now asked to sign an agreement not to say anything detrimental about the company in the media - before receiving their full separation package. Can't be too careful these days.
