Syrian rebels buckling in face of jihadists
Al Arabiya ^ | June 28, 2014 | Associated Press

The Syrian rebels that the U.S. now wants to support are in poor shape, on the retreat from the radical al-Qaida breakaway group that has swept over large parts of Iraq and Syria, with some rebels giving up the fight. It is not clear whether the new U.S. promise to arm them will make a difference.

Some, more hard-line Syrian fighters are bending to the winds and joining the radicals.

The Obama administration is seeking $500 million to train and arm what it calls "moderate" factions among the rebels, a far larger project than a quiet CIA-led effort in Jordan that has been training a few hundreds fighters a month. But U.S. officials say it will take a year to get the new program fully underway. The U.S. also faces the difficult task of what constitutes a "moderate" rebel in a movement dominated by Islamist ideologies.

Opposition activists complain that after long hesitating to arm the rebellion to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad - their main goal - the United States is now enlisting them against the Islamic State out of its own interests. They have long argued that the group, which aims to create a radical Islamic enclave bridging Syria and Iraq, was only able to gain such power in Syria because more moderate forces were not given international support. . .

This is insanity, courtest of US foreign policy. Assad staying in power is the only thing that's keeping ISIS from having a corridor to the Med.

No civilized nation will be safe if that occurs.

I hate to say it but maybe its time to offer a little carrot to go with the stick in the case of Assad.

We help him defeat the terrorists by offering air assets and he backs off from Lebanon and cracks down on terrorists attacking Israel.

Isis is moderate Islamist. These are McCaine Linsey pals. The got new pickups with yr money. They are here from Syria to help. Islam is a peaceful religion /sarc.

Now Sunni Barry and Sunni Abdullah want Shitite Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki and his Iran Al Quds bros out of Iraq so Sunniiites can have Iraq, this means all Shitites must die. Isis Sunitites will thus behead and kill the Shitites for Barry and Abdullah. Except the Iranian Shitites trained and supported by Iran. Then everything will be ok. USA need not get involved except to sell enough bullets to Shitites and Sunnites so they succeed. 2weeks worth should be enough.

Then Iraq can carry on as a democratic Islamic musloid insane country. USA wasted brave patriots on insane evil animals.

If they threaten the US, then we must kill them.

United States spent years training and arming the Iraqis only to see them cut and run at the first sign of trouble from an extremist Sunni militia.

Why would anyone expect a different outcome in Syria?

Why did Hillary and Obama use American taxpayer provided funds, equipment, personnel and facilities to overthrow the government of LIBYA? Where is the outrage from all those liberal professors on that?

Yes, let’s train them and arm them before they switch sides. Brilliant.

I missed that Hollies song. Good idea, but the tune wasn’t catchy enough to make a hit.
