Barnes & Noble to Split Retail Stores, Nook Digital Business

Barnes & Noble Inc. BKS +0.60% is to split in two, separating its unprofitable Nook digital business from its consumer bookstores, an acknowledgment of the difficulties the retailer faces in competing with bigger companies like Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.34% in the e-book and hardware sector.

The split, expected to occur by March, will make Nook Media a separate public company housing both Barnes & Noble's Nook e-book and e-reader business as well as its college stores. Among Nook Media's big shareholders will be Microsoft Corp. MSFT +1.27% and Pearson PSON.LN 0.00% PLC, both of which have invested in the Nook Media division but don't have a stake in the broader company.

I’m with you, grania! I do have an e-reader, and I do use it, but I MUCH prefer a real book.

The e-readers are good for a quick fix-type purchase, but there’s nothing quite like browsing through a real bookstore and coming across an unexpected treasure.

Thankfully, I still have a B&N nearby where I can indulge in a bit of book browsing.

Regards,

Yeah—My son bought a Nook shortly before leaving B&N and he loves it. His concern now is over product support and what will be available in the future.

Ditto squared.

I stare at a @*$(&% computer screen too many hours out of the day. When I have time to do something enjoyable, like read, I want the serene comfort of printed words on paper.

And before anybody replies to this - no, I don’t really give a damm how many books are magazines you have on your little electronic doo-dad. You can have your share and mine both!

Ebooks are SO over priced.

There's so much free content to be consumed on the internet that I must confess I didn't notice.
