Cameraman for Russia's top broadcaster killed in E. Ukraine

A cameraman for Russia's Channel One TV station died from injuries after being shot by Ukrainian troops in Donetsk, the head of the press service for the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

“The cameraman was injured in the stomach and died of the wounds,” Klavdia Kulbatskaya said.

The cameraman Anatoly Klyan, along with a few other journalists, boarded a bus full of women – mostly mothers – who were traveling to a military base in Donetsk to demand that their sons be dismissed from the unit and allowed to go home, Kulbatskaya added.

When the bus reached its destination, shots were fired from the base and that is when the cameraman was injured.

The cameraman died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, DNR’s First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Purgin told RIA Novosti, adding that the driver of the bus was wounded in the neck and is currently in the hospital.

A crew from Channel One confirmed to RT's Maria Finoshina – who is currently in Lugansk – that the cameraman was, in fact, shot and killed. “We have been able to speak with these journalists and they called their colleagues in Donetsk and this information is now confirmed,” Finoshina said.

Dangerous job. Sooner or later it happens to any network that wants to get close to the action.

I will also say that pulling a bus up in front of a military base during tense situations like this, is not exactly a bright idea.

That being said, it would seem to me that there must be some way to make sure you’re not firing on innocents.

Did this happen at a check-point, where they were ordered to stop and they didn’t.

The point is, there may be reasons why firing on the vehicle seems necessary. At this point, I’m not sure.

It is unwise to take RT’s reporting at face value, even on the smallest of details. They have been reporting stuff out of thin air for awhile now. Russian media is state controlled, and everything is filtered first through the FSB, or else originates from the FSB. They make the MSM look like pikers. I would wait till some other sources picks it up and is able to independently verify anything.

Not exactly sure where this happened, conflicting tweets say it was in Donetsk, others say at Artemvisk (the Huge Tank Depot).

If it was in Donetsk, it would explain the base that Kiev troops abandoned and blew up today.

Not a bad idea actually. Sounds like material sure to be used to justify imminent action.

Another base in Donetsk, #3023, along with an Antiaircraft missile group, no. 1407, surrendered this morning without a shot. This one could be BIG TROUBLE for Kiev. Photos show at least two heavy AA Missle AFV’s taken.

Pro-Russian separatists are cannibalizing corpses. I hope this humanitarian aid goes through.

So far, the only English-Language sources for this are RT, and VOR:

VOR is also reporting that a LifeNews crew was shot/shot at today.

Therefore, because two Russian state owned sources that conveniently publish or broadcast their propaganda in English say its true, and no other sources are available in English, are you trying to suggest that we must accept this as true? Would you instead say that perhaps we should take this with a grain of salt? Perhaps the Russian propaganda officer who was killed (or “journalist” if you prefer), was not traveling in bus full of mothers. Perhaps he was imbedded with Russian soldiers who were attacking the base and was caught in the cross fire. Perhaps there is no dead journalist.

I am perfectly willing to acknowledge that this cameraman is dead. But if only RT and Twitter are reporting it, then for all we know he was standing on top of a Russian tank sharing vodka with his buddies.

It won’t be true until CNN says its true.

Help me with your logic. If the reporting is false, we must wait until CNN says it’s false?

Perhaps it did happen and perhaps (more likely)it didn't. When a source like RT is caught lying often, it becomes impossible to use it as a credible news source.

Apparently all the Russian tourists are visiting eastern Ukraine this year. Bad news for the Crimean tourism industry.

Would it be more, or less, acceptable if the dead cameraman belonged to a corporate-funded channel?

Bloomberg’s Jason Corcoran is now reporting it, as well. Is that acceptable to you?
https://twitter.com/jason_corcoran

How about Xavier Colas, from El Mundo?
Stuart Norval from AFP, perhaps??

Is shooting journalists OK with you if they aren’t the “Right kind” of Journalist?

The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg is now reporting, as well.

OH WAIT...
The BBC is State-sponsored, so in your mind, they are obviously lying, right?

Nowhere in there says he was on a bus filled with women and children.
