Carl Leubsdorf: What’s in the political cards for Texas Gov. Rick Perry?
PostBulletin.com ^ | June 30, 2014 | Carl P. Leubsdorf

If he runs again in 2016, Texas Gov. Rick Perry hopes better physical and substantive preparation will enable him to avoid the mishaps that made his 2012 race "painful" and "very humbling." Initial results are distinctly mixed.

One of Perry's greatest assets is his engaging personal manner, reminiscent of Ronald Reagan. But he may have difficulty escaping the 2012 consensus he's not up to being president. As Will Rogers (or perhaps Mark Twain or Oscar Wilde) noted, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

There is a poster on another thread claiming todays GOP is more conservative than Reagan era GOP and arguing it with a freeper that actually worked on the Reagan team.

Stupid. It’s whats for dinner.

Perry isn’t bad, but he’s no Ted Cruz.

Perry isn't bad? Just a couple of weeks ago he praised Hillary by saying she was a “great Secretary of State”. A real conservative would never have done that. Nor would a real conservative have worked to keep Ted Cruz from going to Washington. Nor would a real conservative have opposed a border fence. Nor would a real conservative try to impose a nanny-state executive order to force females to have injections of unproven medication. A real conservative would not have endorsed RINO Mitch McConnell for reelection. A real conservative would not give financial aid and instate tuition to ILLEGAL aliens. A real conservative would not characterized as heartless the conservative voting base for opposing such handouts for ILLEGAL aliens. Perry is no conservative and he is far from being “not bad”. Perhaps your definition of “bad” differs from mine.

I wouldn’t vote for Perry, but he is a lot better than Chris Christie and his ilk.

There are about 10 Republicans I would pick over Perry.

How can he be bad with Haley Barbour and Carl Rogue for his campaign consorts? And just look how he has stood up for the TEXAS Constitution and his authority to close our border.

No doubt in my mind together they would try the Mississippi version of “black outreach” against conservative candidates.

Win, lose or draw the Mississippi template is our future. Cash votes.

The Feds are running Rick on the border. Call his office. They will tell you the same. Bupkis. We have bupkis with Rick on this INVASION.

Perry’s pretty damn good on some things and terrible is on others. He’s too crony for me....but good on the 10th and general economic issues. I hoped he’d come through last time to get Romney out of there...he would have been much better and able to differentiate Obama’s failed vision with successful states. That said, he was terrible in 2012, and we can do much better this time.

NOTHING. The ONLY thing that may get him there is if he CRUSHES the invasion in Texas. So far, he's more interested in three things: California, fundraising, and ...uh...I forget the third thing.

They are a lot alike. But I think he is more like George W. Bush only w/o the communication skills. :-P
