Well, we can be thankful that the current flag was a clear and obvious winner.

True. As much as I like the Red Ensign, the Maple Leaf has grown on us and is instantly recognizable throughout the world.

If symmetry is your preference, I always thought the original British design was pretty good. A little busy, though. I prefer a simplified version:

It’s a nice looking flag, but a secular symbol is always a step down from a Cross. Admittedly, we have the same problem.

Funny you should post that- Canada’s independence was a direct result of the War Between the States.

Gorgeous flag....and a fitting companion for your superb national anthem..I wish the USA would switch to “God Bless America”

That's the source of the motto on our Coat of Arms- a mari usque ad mare.

My father (who art, I presume, in heaven) played for the First U.S. Army band during the War. One of the things they did was play the national anthem for visiting dignitaries. When a Canadian was the object of their attention, they would play “The Maple Leaf Forever”, of course.
In days of yore, from Britain’s shore,
Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came
And planted firm Britannia’s flag
On Canada’s fair domain.
Here may it wave, our boast our pride
And, joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The Maple Leaf forever!
The thistle, shamrock and rose representing Scotland, Ireland and England. My father really preferred it over other national anthems, on the grounds that, who, after all, could object to the maple leaf? The correct Jeopardy response, Alex, was “Who are the Québécois?” And they show it on their license plates.

I liked the flag they were waving years ago during one of the secession votes; the center was half maple leaf/half flour-de-lis.
The older one (that looks like some of today’s provincial flags) was a better one if they wanted to be taken seriously...

The older flag was the Red Ensign, which was derived from a Royal Navy flag- the White Ensign was for the home fleet, red for the Atlantic, and Blue for the Pacific. Australia still flies the Blue Ensign.

Yes, that’s the one; I’m no fan of England, and don’t care for the harp on the flag (implying ownership or unity), but I’d take someone more seriously if they waved that instead of the maple leaf. Granted, our current US flag is just as apolitical and non-offending (unlike some of the Revolutionary War and state flags, which make statements); it just seems so overly simple...

I much prefer the Bonnie Blue, as much as most people have no idea what it is.
