Republican: 'No problem' for path to legal status
The Hill ^ | July 2 2014 | Rebecca Shabad

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) said Wednesday there would be “no problem” in getting the House to pass legislation that would provide a pathway to legal status for immigrants in the U.S. illegally, adding that a pathway to citizenship is "potentially doable."

“I think there's no problem getting through the House a pathway to legal status. A pathway to citizenship is going to be tougher, but I think it is potentially doable, if we can show the American people that the border is secure,” Farenthold said on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.” “My constituents feel betrayed by the promise that Reagan made, that if we grant amnesty, we'll then secure the border. We obviously didn't do that.”

Parents who brought their children to the United States illegally are a “very sympathetic problem” Farenthold added. “We've educated them in our schools, and they become a burden on society if they can't get a job.”

The Republican said the border is “relatively secure” but “not secure enough,” given the roughly 52,000 unaccompanied children from Central America who have crossed into the U.S. since October.

Asked if the current crisis hurts immigration reform prospects, Farenthold said, “I think, politically, it may,” but he stressed it could be addressed without a comprehensive bill.

“I don't think you'd have any problem getting legislation through the House to have expedited deportation procedures, getting more judges down to prosecute or hear these cases,” said Farenthold, who said it could take years before the children get a hearing otherwise.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told the GOP caucus last week that the House would not hold a vote on immigration reform this year. President Obama announced on Monday that he is taking executive action to fix the system as much as he can himself.

Farenthold suggested he supports the Obama administration’s request for $2 billion in funds to fix the situation at the border, but he said, “We've got to speed up the process.”

On Tuesday, protestors blocked three buses carrying immigrant families to a border patrol processing station in California. Farenthold called protests in response to the crisis “uninformed.”

“This is a humanitarian crisis,” he said. “The whole country needs to step up and help out.”

I suppose they will say that we have to pass amnesty to find out if the border is secure.

Then bus the invaders to his district and let’s see how his voters like it and him, after they get bussed to his district.

Mr. Farenthold's district in South Texas contains the city of Corpus Christi, which is the seat of Nueces County. If you visit the Nueces County Courthouse, one thing you will notice is that 1) all of the county employees are bilingual, without exception, and 2) almost none of the people asking the county employees questions are doing so in English.

So, it wouldn't make any difference if they bused a few more illegal aliens into Corpus Christi. The place is pretty much overrun with them now...a few dozen more aren't going to matter.

The reason I point this out is that, judging from the tenor of your remarks, you seem to think that Mr. Farenthold or his constituents would be completely blown away by the appearance of a few illegal aliens in their midst. I can assure you that that is not the case, and if you have spent any time in South Texas, then you understand how hilariously silly such a notion is. Hundreds of thousands of them already call his district home. They are his constituents, if not necessarily his political supporters.

Actually, since we already have immigration laws on the book, we have to assume that "immigration reform" means they want to remove immigration laws from the books.

Did not know the make up his district.
Knew some one like you would inform me.

By all means the busses should drop them in his district.
Sounds like they will fit in nicely there.

If we let things slide in HIS district, then things will slide in the district INLAND from his, too.

Be vigilant!

Farenthold, if the border was secure, would we have 2 year olds trying to CROSS it ILLEGALLY??

Before illegals become citizens, we need to have them deported, pay us back for educating their kids, pay the wages they got for ILLEGALLY working and go to the back of the line. Then, have a quota on Latinos, at 75% of Asians and whites.

We need more people in Hi Technology than in agriculture. Most of the people coming from Central America are not people who's going to work for Yahoo. Not being racist, but it's true.

He is a step-grandson of Sissy Farenthold, according to Wikipedia. Sissy was married to Blake’s grandfather, George Farenthold, from 1950 to 1985.
