D.C. residents urged to boycott Md. shore to protest congressman’s marijuana move

If you’re a District resident planning to vacation in the Maryland havens of Ocean City or St. Michaels this summer, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and some D.C. activists would prefer you choose Rehoboth Beach, Del., or Chincoteague Island, Va., instead.

A week after Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) successfully attached an amendment to a House budget bill that would overturn the city’s marijuana decriminalization law, Gray and the District’s largest voting-rights advocacy group said city residents would be better off vacationing somewhere besides Harris’s district, which includes all of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“I don’t think we should support someone who doesn’t support us, who doesn’t support democracy, period,” the mayor said Wednesday after a news conference at which he decried Harris’s actions as “hypocrisy at its worst.”

The nonprofit group D.C. Vote called for an all-out boycott of vacation spots in the 1st Congressional District, saying Harris “acted in wanton disregard” of the views of D.C. residents. A January Washington Post poll found that roughly eight in 10 city residents support legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana.

While I think Harris should have butted out, DC is being just plain annoying in this instance.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!

“I don’t think we should support someone who doesn’t support us, who doesn’t support democracy, period,”

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE 2ND AMMENDMENT!

The stupidity is painful.

A boycott of DC residents of Rep. Harris’ district sounds like a secondary, unexpected benefit.

Fine with this Eastern Shore resident if the DC crowd stays on that side of the Bridge.

And they can stay out of the 2nd district in Virginia, which includes Chincoteague, Rehoboth Beach, DE is more to their liking anyway.

Yeah, especially Poodle Beach. Rehoboth used to be such a lovely little place. I used to vacation there when my kids were young. Always enjoyed the small town feeling, while I absolutely loathe Ocean City, MD.

I don’t see the denizens of DC fitting in with the folks in St. Michaels.

Loved OC as a kid, but that was a billion years ago. Now, when I visit I hang out with my family in Easton.

Ditto here with OC, but that was in the 1950s and ‘60s, long before all of the high rises, the nonstop traffic, and the trashy people.

Easton in a nice town. (But Chestertown is better.)

Family’s been there since the early 1900’s. What an idyllic place it must have been, especially prior to the bridge. Mom lives in a farm house on the water.

There was a group of us that would go to Rehoboth a couple of times a year in the mid 90s, but it was always off season, and in the daytime in the middle of the week.

I’m with both of you, don’t care for OC. We hangout on Chincoteague and as far as I’m concerned the denizens of D.C. can just stay the heck on their side of the Chesapeake!

Harris represents whats left of normal Marylanders who were all gerrymandered into one district to avoid a the previous 4/4 congressional split between dems and republicans.

While it killed any chance of winning another part of Maryland for republicans, it also killed any chance of a liberal winning in this area. The guy is the real deal and his wife is very active in the Pro-life movement.
