SHEBOYGAN – On Monday, U.S. House Speaker John Boehner said that immigration reform will not be decided by the Congress in the 2014 calendar year. The decision to not pursue immigration reform led President Barack Obama to consider taking executive action on the issue.
Wisconsin Election Watch talked to all three Republican candidates running for the 6th Congressional District on where they stand on the issue of immigration reform.

Joe Leibham (R-Sheboygan) felt on whether Congress should pursue immigration reform that: “Not this year. First and foremost, we need to secure the borders and stop the problem where it starts. President Obama has no credibility to demand a change in the rules if he’s not properly enforcing them.” When asked about what should be the solution to immigration reform, he said: “I have not yet seen the Senator’s proposal but can tell you one requirement up front for any proposal: No amnesty. Crossing our border illegally is breaking the law. Amnesty is a reward for lawbreaking. As long as America is a nation of laws, no one should become an American citizen by violating our laws. If any proposal meets this requirement, I will gladly review it further.”
Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) said that: “I don’t think anyone believes that this Congress is going to be able to pass any type of meaningful measure this year. This issue is a prime example of career politicians making excuses and not willing to make the difficult choices to fix our current problems, ” when discussing when Congress should take up immigration reform. Stroebel called out the current Congress saying: “Our immigration system has been an ongoing disaster for more than twenty years and the need for immigration reform in the United States is without question. The career politicians have failed to find answers – common sense solutions are needed immediately.”
On the policy aspect, Stroebel said: “While the need for a complete overhaul is warranted, we must immediately secure the borders before any comprehensive bill is discussed. Once the borders are secure, I would be open to looking at reform legislation, so long as that bill does not contain measures that award blanket amnesty or a pathway to citizenship for illegals. It is not good policy, past or present, to reward those who broke our laws. While we are a nation of immigrants, we are also a nation of laws – our laws must be upheld.”
Glenn Grothman (R-Campbellsport) said that the current immigration law needs to be enforced. The State Senator said that he would be in favor of changing provisions of children born to illegal immigrants: “If an American citizen would have a child in another country, on a vacation for example, that child does not automatically become a citizen of whichever country the child is born in. The child is an American citizen under US law. I am in favor of looking into that provision for children born to illegal immigrants in America.”

None of them seems to be able to say NO NO NO to ‘immigration reform’.
Talk of a “broken system” which is code for “we eventually need reform” and talk of “securing the border” which again is the game the politicians will play in the end with some sort of security measure (real or fake) followed by the opening of an amnesty floodgate called “immigration reform”.
The Grothman guy talked about children born in the United States as a problem but did he say NO NO NO to “immigration reform”.
Powerful interests and big money want the floodgates opened to a cheap labor pool.

Listen carefully. Changing the status of children born in the USA to parents who are not citizens WOULD be immigration reform.
Grotham instead of talking about reform is only taking the tact that we only need to enforce the current laws. That tact tells me he is resistant to any new laws which he knows will also not be enforced.
That is excellent, almost perfect, therefore I can’t see it ever being adopted by the lawbreakers in Congress.
You have to stop the bleeding first and foremost.
Bus the illegals to the neighborhoods where these Congressmen live.
Your asking for it. Sure they’ll bus them there but then keep on going into your neighborhood.
Glenn is really an awesome dude. No ANCHOR babies! That is the kind of reform we need.
We need some real change and not business as usual in Washington including no votes for leaders like Boehner, McCarthy, Ryan etc. etc.
If this guy thinks that Paul Ryan is doing something really conservative with his new taxes and military pension cut budget plan currently in force with co-sponsor Democrat Patty Murray, then I’m not that excited about him.
95 percent of elected Republicans and Republican candidates are not real conservatives......
