Happy Fourth of July! Today we celebrate 238 years of American independence. To that end, here are four interesting facts about this uniquely American holiday that you might not be aware of.
(1) Did you know that the Second Continental Congress approved a resolution to dissolve all political ties with Great Britain on July 2, 1776? It wasnt until two days later, on July 4th, that the Founding Fathers formally adopted the document we now universally refer to as the Declaration of Independence.
The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America, John Adams wrote his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776. As it turned out, he was off by a few days.
(2) John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both passed away on July 4, 1826 -- 50 years after the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted. The fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, also died on July 4th shortly thereafter -- in 1831.
(3) Fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence. Pennsylvanias Benjamin Franklin (70) was the oldest to sign his name, and South Carolinas Edward Rutledge (26) was the youngest.
(4) John Hancock was the first delegate to sign the Declaration; and he was only one of two delegates to do so on July 4, 1776. According to legend, he decided to sign his name in big, ostentatious letters so that, as he put it, the fat old King could read it without his spectacles.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

The Declaration is the link between the Bible and the Constitution.
I regard this as a sacred testament to the courage and wisdom of man.
I regretfully admit that several times in this reading of the Declaration, I (no kidding) wondered if the poster had, on his own, inserted serious references to OUR government in the year 2014.
Do a careful read of the list of grieviences, it can be sort of, no, actually frightening.
Nevermind... found the one I kept reading over. What is amazing to me is so many of the statements against the king could apply to our President.

Would that there were 56 who would mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor, in an effort to restore a Free Republic, and punish the usurpers, no doubt this must be done every 200 years more or less.

Just signing that document was a significant act of courage.
It was going to be a sure hanging for the signers if they did not prevail.
In our fair city, Independence Day was June 27th this year. They’ve done this the past few years, shifting the date of the fireworks display forward a day or two for one reason or another. But, this year, they shifted an entire week, from the actual Friday date, to the Friday before. More convenient, I suppose, at least for those who were prepared to show up a week early.
So much for American culture. It was extremely ignorant of the capitalists to create President’s Day IMHO and to make mondays the celebration days. loses a lot of the significance.

I believe that the success and wealth of Europe was a direct result of Gods blessings on those who called upon His name. Unfortunately, during the 18th and 19th centuries, the Age of Enlightenment dawned among European intelligentsia, pushing out belief in God. Over several centuries, Europe has fallen from its power and wealth, today being a series of welfare states, out of Gods favour.
As both the US and Canada, at their founding, were Christian-based, both were blessed by God, the result being that citizens of both countries were afforded the highest standard of living in the world. At the dawn of the 20th century, Canada was arguably, a more Christian country that the US, as measured by percentage of the population attending weekly church services. In the 60s, Canada partially abandoned its Christian history, embracing a socialist ideal. This led to many economic, social and spiritual problems.
Canada, led by a Christian Prime Minister, has almost consistently led the G20 in growth for years. We have avoided many of the traps the US economy has fallen prey to. I believe this to be Gods blessing, based upon a return by many in Canada, to Gods rule. Unfortunately, the US has fallen into the socialist trap, as led by the gentleman from Hawaii (or some foreign country); a man who claims to follow Jesus, yet shows few signs of following The Word.
Since all rulers (Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings, Queens, etc.) are in their positions of power through Gods Grace, we need to pray for them. (There is a well-known saying that if you dont like your Pastor or what he does, then pray EVEN MORE for him! The same can be said for those in positions of authority over us.) My prayer, this Independence Day (and three days after Canada Dominion Day) is that the _resident of 2600 Pennsylvania Avenue (and the resident of 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa) seek the will of the Lord and follow the Holy Spirits leading. Only that can result in correction of the economic and spiritual malaise that affects both countries. I would also pray that the citizens of both countries follow 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. I believe that citizens of both countries need to pray for God to raise up Christian leaders, both churchmen, business leaders and politicians, to lead both countries back to Him.

There is a legend that Charles Carroll of Carrollton added the "of Carrollton" because one of the other signers remarked that he did not have the same danger of being put to death as the others because there were several Charles Carrolls in Maryland, so if he just signed "Charles Carroll" they wouldn't know which one to hang. In fact he normally signed himself as "Charles Carroll of Carrollton" to distinguish himself from relatives who also had the first name Charles. The story first appears around 1940, I think.
