As we celebrate the Fourth of July, who can argue that our democracy is working the way the Founders intended? And who can deny that most of the blame for dysfunction must fall to the Republican Party?
George Washington distrusted all political parties. He warned in his farewell address that, as they alternated power, parties would act in “the spirit of revenge” — rather than, presumably, in the best interests of the nation. The “disorders and miseries” that resulted, Washington feared, would inevitably threaten democracy.
Whatever the motivation, Republicans have paralyzed our government in a way that would have shocked and depressed the Founders. Compounding the outrage, Republicans have the temerity to criticize Obama for using his executive powers in the national interest. This is dangerously close to nihilism.
But now, one party — the GOP — cares more about ideology, reelection and opposing Obama’s every initiative than about the well-being of the nation. It is scant comfort, on Independence Day, to remember that the republic has survived worse.

Why aren't the boys and girls of Chicago or D.C. fleeing north to Canada to escape the violence and predatory gangs that have grown up in these cities that have gone unaddressed by their Democrat governing bodies for decades ?
The “Founders” (funny he didn’t say “Founding Fathers”, but used the name of the shape-shifting tyrants in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) did not set up a democracy in the USA; they set up a republic.
But of course the DemocRat Party is as pure as the driven snow and completely blameless for all the country’s government ills, as far as Robinson is concerned.

Hey, Eugene, has it crossed your mind that perhaps the difference lies in our differing views of what are the "basic obligations of government"?
We believe that securing our borders, national defense, building roads and bridges, securing energy independence, and helping those who legitimately can't help themselves are the basic obligations of government. Really not much more than that. Obama doesn't appear to be interested in any of those things. It's quite simple actually.
The more Blacks in the media (like Eugene) and those in the government open their mouths, the dumber they make their race sound. It is a shame since there are a lot of great and intelligent Blacks out there — but then they aren’t on the Dem plantation following along like lemmings.
