Iowa Banned Most Fireworks 76 Years Ago. Now One Lawmaker Is Trying to Change That.
The Heritage Foundation's Daily Signal ^ | July 04, 2014 | by Paul Brennen

Jerri Andersen wasn’t impressed by the Fourth of July fireworks display at her local Hy-Vee in Urbandale, Iowa.

“Of course, it’s not their fault,” she said.

And it isn’t. The supermarket was displaying the only types of fireworks people can buy or possess in Iowa without a special permit: sparklers and snakes.

All other consumer fireworks were banned in Iowa 76 years ago, following devastating fires in Spencer and Remen. The ban wouldn’t have prevented either fire. Both are believed to have been started by reckless use of sparklers.

Andersen, from Colorado where most fireworks are legal, eventually decided on a package of multicolored sparklers.

I get it in some States. Here in CA the drought is so bad we’d lose a large portion of the nation’s food supply if a fire started in a few “wrong” places.

“...started by reckless use of sparklers.”

See any parallels here in the effort to ban certain types of firearms?

It’s ironic that sparklers are still legal, whereas ground-based cone-style fireworks are not. As a parent, I never got the kids sparklers - long, sharp, very hot and held in the hand. They just seemed like a blind eye waiting to happen. Hated ‘em!

I think my state of ND does it right.

You can buy whatever you want - subject to Federal guidelines (oddly no bottle rockets) - for the week of the 4th and New Years. Then they are illegal again. So the noise is limited.

The cities can have their own ordinances which are generally ignored.

Reminds me of gun control.

Living in Appanoose County, it was SOP for us to make a run down to Unionville, MO for big firecrackers, cheap gas and $.85 sixpacks...

I live in a large liberal city where fireworks for the prols is verboten. I appreciate that even in this liberal mecca there is a streak of rebellion among the populace. All around the 4th of July in the early evening you hear the “swoosh, BANG” and “screeee, BOOM” of fireworks going off in the city. It gives me a bit of hope that there are still those who will stand up and ignore the authorities.

Concur. I was born in Iowa, lived some time there, and went to college there.

By and large, the mindset is safety over liberty among most Iowegians. I’m struck by a total lack of fire in the belly. Southern counties being an exception,

Yep, that was Hunt’s. Started precisely to meet the cross border demand.

There was also a little 3.2 bar that collected Iowegians on Sundays.
That was back when no liquor or beer was sold on Sunday.
