A Hit Song That Will Make You Equally Ashamed to Be American and Canadian (2 VIDEOS)

In June 1973, Canadian DJ Byron McGregor read this above commentary (written by fellow Great White Northerner Gordon Sinclair) on a radio station broadcasting out of Toronto. It eventually became a massive hit, peaking at number four on the Top 40 charts and generating cover versions by Tex Ritter and others.

Despite not knowing the Canada was America's biggest trading partner, Ronald Reagan praised the track by name when he made his first trip abroad as president.

Ironically, because it was written and performed by Canadians, it satisfied Canada's idiotic (and still in force, even when it comes to pornography) rules about airing a certain amount of domestically produced cultural content.

Without going full Lee Greenwood, I'm very proud to be an American and I thank my grandparents every day for emigrating here rather than England or Argentina (the two other likely choices, given that one side was Irish and the other Italian).

But even on the Fourth of July weekend, perspective is a wonderful thing. Take it way, Remy, talking about the Veterans Affairs scandal:

I am not ashamed of AMERICA I am ashamed of the liberal left hateful liars. John the traitor Kerry and Jane Hanoi Fonda are the problem makers. Cronkite declared “The War is lost” to the world just after the US had won the first great , Tet, battle since WWII. The democrats then defunded the
Army to guarantee the loss.

I am not ashamed of America just liberals.

Yes, I still am frustrated at Cronkite. We actually won the Tet Offensive. South Vietnam actually held back and successfully defended against that major series of attacks from North Vietnam.

But Walter Cronkite went on TV, allegedly doing a documentary on the war, and declared all was lost in Vietnam. His reporting was a turning point, for the war, for LBJ deciding not to run again, and gave legitimacy to the hippies and anti war protesters. A bad case of advocacy “journalism” in my opinion.

I was watching The American Revolution on the American Heroes Channel the other day. It is narrated by Walter Cronkite. Whoever made this crap allowed Cronkite to add his revisionist moral equivalency into the narration included many references to the supposed hypocrisy of Jefferson writing "all mean are created equal" while owning slaves. There were plenty of other references to heroes of our revolution as being failures and malcontents.

I turned it off and warn other FReepers that they will be sickened by this program and it is best avoided.

We the people, the hard working, patriotic millions in fly-over country, are the true Americans

We are the ones who keep alive the American traditions and ideals laid down by the Founding Fathers.

Not those socialist, word twisting, law breaking, one-world loving, arrogant America Haters inside the Washington beltway who laugh at the US Constitution.

The pendulum swings both ways.
They will get their just rewards.

And LBJ was an idiot for allowing a glorified news reader to spin what was actually happening and determine his future.

I don't get the point of this article - is there supposed to be something wrong with "The Americans"?
