Is Trek of Undocumented Immigrant Children Safer Than Staying Home?
NBC News ^ | July 6, 2014 | BY MIGUEL ALMAGUER AND ELISHA FIELDSTADT

Pulitzer Prize winning author who followed the treacherous trip of a young Honduran boy to the United States said many of the children crossing the border today are refugees and should be treated as such.

Sonia Nazario, who won the Pulitzer for a 2002 L.A. Times piece which eventually became the book "Enrique’s Journey," retraced the trek from Honduras through Mexico of the young boy who, without a dollar to his name, spent months on the tops of freight trains on a quest to find his mother in the U.S.

Having personally — physically — held on to the sides and tops of seven different freight trains in an effort to get a sense of what Enrique and other immigrant children endured, Nazario knows the dangers firsthand.

"There are gangsters who control the train tops ... bandits who will rob you and rape you and sometimes kill you," she said. Then there’s the train itself — dubbed "La Bestia" or "The Beast” — that children jump on to and off of as it speeds onward. The kids “lose arms and legs to that freight train," Nazario said.

But the danger faced on the journey is nothing compared to the violence these young immigrants face in their home countries.

America is not a refuge or dumping ground for LatAm's poor, illiterate, and often diseased population. The UN reported in 2013 that LatAm has over 68 million people living in "extreme poverty".

Secure the border NOW.

Letting the very people who allowed their countries to become hell holes to come here isn’t going to make anything better. It will make this country worse.

When you reward something, you get more of it.

Safer for whom?

RE: "America is not a refuge or dumping ground for LatAm's poor, illiterate, and often diseased population."

Safer for us yes.

And yes I do firmly believe that those who abuse the immigrant children -- INCLUDING THEIR OWN PARENTS -- on their trek should be severely punished.

Despite bad conditions in their home country, I can't imagine parents just sending their kids alone to trek through Mexico with a good chance they will could be raped, sold into prostitution or killed just in hopes of getting to the US. I find it totally unbelievable that thousands of parents would do this.

This is an organized effort directed at Central American countries whose unaccompanied children have a different status under US law than kids from Mexico. The Mexican government has been convinced to look the other way as this children's crusade moves north through their country. It is also highly suspicious that this mass migration is just starting now...the supposed bad conditions in El Salvador and Honduras have been going on for years and the special status for minor children has been on the books since 2008.

I am convinced this children's crusade is being organized by the Obama administration as part of a strategy to push for an executive order opening the borders to millions of immigrants who will be Democratic voters. This manufactured "crisis" could well be Obama's Reichstag fire.

Nor do I...

If I had $8,000 plus and wanted to send my child to the US I would buy a plane ticket and send them to the city where their illegal alien relatives live...

I wouldn’t give it to a coyote...

Or I would also buy a ticket for myself and take the child to wherever...

$8,000 buys a good seat on a plane...

The child has to go to where the train tracks are...

Airports cant be that far away...

Plus since these are suppose to be “refugees” why have none of them gone to the US Embassy and applied for asylum in our country ???

NBC disguises a categorical statement but making it a question, “Is Trek ... Safer ...?”.

The MSM Orcs, trolls and goblins are in `full helmet defilade’ mode for their Necromancer, `Sauron’ Obama.

Mom never forgot Enrique---she claimed him on falsified EITC forms year after year....to get more money.

Now Hollywood has the rights to the story---Mom managed to "save" $300,000 flipping hamburgers in a fast food store, and lives in a paid-up $400,000 house.

Enrique will live happily ever after----still listed on EITC forms.

They are NOT “undocumented immigrants” - they are ILLEGAL ALIENS! Calling them undocumented immigrants is like calling shoplifting an “undocumented purchase.”

. . . on a quest to find his mother in the U.S.

This is an interesting detail. In other words, he was not SENT from his home country but more likely was SENT FOR.

That sob-story has holes in it big enough to drive an 18 wheeler through-what mother runs off to the US or anywhere else and leaves their kids behind-we call that “neglect” where I’m from. And add “child abuse”, since this “mother” endangered her child’s life by handing him over to criminal strangers...

If the drug cartels are running their country, and law enforcement is corrupt, whose fault is that? If they don’t like it, let them do the right thing-get off their asses and take the corrupt individuals down, and their country back-otherwise, shut up and live in that 3d world hellhole that they allowed to be created...

If his mami saved $8000-a small fortune in Central America-I’m not sure I want to know how she made that princely sum, since the going unskilled wage is maybe $8.00 per day. And as another poster noted, that would buy both a fake tourist visa and a plane ticket for the kid to the US city of her choice for him-why turn the kid over to a coyote/human trafficker to likely be used as slave labor on a remote farm/ranch, in a whorehouse or as a drug mule? Pretty stupid way to spend $8000, if you ask me...

I have absolutely no sympathy for these people and even less for Obama’s idiots who allowed this to happen, and deserve whatever consequences happen in November-I’m campaigning for whomever wants to load the illegals all onto busses going south of the border. Send them all back, now, do not pass go, do not collect $200, an EBT card, or anything else-these whining leeches with no decent ambition make me ashamed to be Hispanic myself...

Trek? I have some ocean front property for sale in Arizona for anyone who believes little kiddies crossed thousands of miles of scorching desert fighting off bobcats, rattle snakes, drug gangs and hunger all by their lonesome.

It never happened-they were turned over to coyotes/traffickers by their stupid relatives in the hopes that thousands of dollars would get them to the border alive and not too much worse for the trip. There are plenty of dumbasses who believe that little kids trekked here, so-I’ll add a bridge to your oceanfront, and we’ll both be rich.

I was born and raised in S. Texas, and as a ranch kid, I know none of these kids were alone on their trip-and probably not on foot, either...
