US Has $10M Bounty on ISIL Leader It Previously Held

For nearly three years the United States has had a $10 million bounty on the man who has emerged as the leader of Islamic insurgents, even though American authorities had him in custody during the U.S. war in Iraq.

U.S. military authorities captured the man known by his nom de guerre, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in 2005, and held him four four years at Camp Bucca, detention center the U.S. was operating in southern Iraq.

But as the United States wound down combat operations in Iraq, former President George W. Bush signed an agreement turning over all detainees to the Iraqis, who released Baghdadi in 2010.

That year Baghdadi assumed leadership of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the group that has taken control of large swathes of Iraq and Syria.

ISIL poses a great threat to the Baghdad government as the militants seek to impose a Sunni Islam caliphate across the Middle East.

The U.S. officially designated Baghdadi a terrorist in 2011 and offered the $10 million reward for his capture or killing.

An elementary school class is touring a post office.

Postmaster: And here are the wanted posters.
Little girl: Who are those people?
Postmaster: They are bad men. The police want to arrest them.
Little girl: Why didn’t the police just arrest the bad men when they took their pictures?

That is a brilliant tactic by the Obungler. The terrorists can live without this clown (or a body double) but they will get 10 Mil, to buy more weapons. The Obungler can't come right out and give them weapons, so he devised this cleaver scheme, to get them the money, without attracting too much attention. Brilliant, I tell you. Absolutely brilliant.

Malaki is weak. He’ll probably get hung the Shia if the Sunni doesn’t get to him first.

Wow, am I wrong, I thought it was ISIL that our current administration helped in Syria in the fight against Bashar Assad?? We put a 10 mil bounty on him (again) and then give him help and I believe that includs US weapons... Please somebody tell me I have it wrong! If correct, would this not a very real reason to impeach (not that there have not been plenty of others)?? Seems like that is the definition of Treason...

$10 mil bounty is wrong. How much was on OBL ( comparative value, dead or alive), and how long did it take until it was officially announced OBL was killed - 11 yrs? To handover people like Baghdadi to a bunch of misfits & corrupt politicians, especially in that part of the world, was wrong. Maybe some fantasized Baghdadi somehow, after a few yrs in detention, became a moderate muslim!

we are officially idiots

One has to wonder about the learning these ISIS leaders acquired at Guantanamo. ISIS has been frightening from day one, one reason being they're so media savy and able to communicate with westerners. Did Bagdadi learn these skills from the US, then get funded to fight against Assad? Keep in mind that it was former POW McCain who has gone to Syria (and other places) to meet with rebels become terrorists.

These are questions that need to be answered.

Ok, Bush let them go.

How come we can kill anyone at anytime by using armed drones but can seem to find this guy? Obviously odumbo has his control over that plan too.

Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was in custody at a detention facility in Iraq. He was among the prisoners released in 2009 from the U.S.’s now-closed Camp Bucca near Umm Qasr in Iraq

He was released in 2009, on Obama’s watch.

Obama chose not to make his own State of Forces Agreement in Iraq. Instead of accepting the responsibility of CinC, he walked away.

Obama could have prevented the power vacuum that let ISIS in - and he could have chosen to keep Baghdadi incarcerated. Instead he completely refused to engage with Iraq. He did nothing except play golf and concentrate on his real enemy - the American people.
