I was in a Wal-Mart in Houston a few months back, and I was standing in line in a self-checkout lane behind a woman who was buying candy with her EBT card. Somehow, the register had added sales tax to her purchase. Acutely aware of the fact that food stamp purchases are exempt from state sales taxes, she walked off to find a cashier to remove the tax. When she returned, I asked her why she cared since I was the one paying for her candy.
Are all food purchases exempt from sales tax or only EBT ones?
