You’ve got my curiosity up. Under current law, if someone builds their own gun, for their own use, what kind of legal restrictions are there? Any?

Thats right. Its not skirting the law at all. I can legally build any gun I want (non full auto) for my own use. I think you can build full-auto as well, it's regulated by a tax — which, IIRC, stems from the interstate commerce clause.
