Howie Carr thread July & August 2014

Let's link the months of July & August for Howie in this thread. It should be interesting to see what happens in the next couple months as Howie's WRKO contract ends around Sept or so; he's planning to syndicate with a company called Global Media and maybe WRKO will opt to carry him but who knows (would think his affiliate stations currently would stay with him and maybe expand). And an item in today's Inside Track in the Herald hints that some higher priced talent at Fox 25--like Doug "VB" Goudie and Maria Stephanos--may be worried at the upcoming takeover of the station by Cox. Would the likes of VB wind up back on radio?

Anyway we'll start it with today's Herald column.

Wed column: here He’s not going to be the next governor of Massachusetts, but state Treasurer Steve Grossman will make it into the new edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

At age 68, he will be listed as the “world’s oldest child still collecting an allowance from his 92-year-old mother.”

Who knew? Of course we understood that all the stuff in his TV spots about “creating jobs” was beyond a stretch — it was his dad’s envelope company. But now that we know his mom is financing his super PAC with untold thousands upon thousands of dollars, well, it’s going to be hard to keep a straight face seeing those commercials of his as the Bill Gates of Newtonville.

A guy 68 years old still sponging off Mom — what kind of business has he been running all these years?

A lemonade stand?

When the hacks passed the law last week to force out these kinds of PAC revelations, did they know the first big fish they were going to snare was Mrs. Shirley Grossman?

This ensures an obvious question at the next Democrat debate:

“We’d like to ask each of the candidates, when did your mom stop giving you an allowance? Mr. Grossman, would you like to go first?”

Steve isn’t the first poor little rich kid pol to mooch off his parents. At least 30 percent of the Massachusetts Democratic electorate these days are trustafarians. The bigger the trust fund, the bigger the moonbat. Why do you think the state keeps electing these despicable frauds? They don’t work; they get the kiss in the mail, like a hack or an illegal alien.

But with the trust fund, most of them never have to go groveling to Ma for a handout. That never works. Look what happened when Ted Kennedy borrowed the keys to Rose’s ’67 Oldsmobile Delmont for his weekend on Chappaquiddick.

Or John Kerry, running for president on his second wife’s first husband’s trust fund in 2004, couldn’t even get away with claiming his five SUVs didn’t really belong to him, but to his gold-digging wife.

“Those are my family’s SUVs,” he whined, as convincingly as Grossman.

Poor Shirley. I think she let her son down. He must have gone to her and told her that as treasurer, he just had to run for governor like all the other kids.

To which she should have replied, “Well, Steven, if Joe and Shannon and Tim all jumped off a cliff, would you jump off a cliff too?”

The answer is, yes he would, and has. And he’s about a month from hitting the same bottom they all did.

Of course, maybe it’s not just love that made her do it. When Barry White came to her looking for a contribution for Boy Grossman, perhaps she thought she was talking to the real Barry White, the singer, not some nonentity ambassador.

Alas, the real Barry White passed on in 2003. And Steve Grossman’s political career passes on in about five weeks. But at least he’ll live on, in the Guinness Book of World
Records.

AM 680, WRKO Boston’s Talk Station has a rare opening for a full time talk show host.

Do you have what it takes to be in a top ten market, with 50,000 watts of power at your command and working under these legendary call letters that gave birth to the talk format? WRKO is looking someone who lives and breathes the news cycle. Not just politics, but pop culture as well. Can you discuss any topic with a passion; can you disagree without being disagreeable? Can you light up the phone lines, keep the conversation moving and interesting? Can you leave your ego at the door and work for a company that will give you the best and brightest minds in the industry to help guide you to success? If this sounds like you- and you’re ready to “ship off to Boston,” and “love this dirty water,” send your unedited air checks now.

Rep John Binienda of Worcester has died. Howie nicknamed him Spuds—accused of assault on his then-wife in 1992

Howie 2/6/14: “”How about state Rep. John Binienda, my dear pal from Worcester. He too was once accused of assault and battery — on his wife. Was he expelled from this august body?”

Howie update and I’ll let you know if I hear more:

From what I’ve heard, he is to be syndicated by a company called Global Media. His show with Entercom/WRKO is to expire sometime next month (don’t know when) and he’ll hopefully start the new show right away. While he’s being syndicated (regionally or nationally) by Global Media, he also may be producing the show with the help of the Financial Exchange/Money Matters. He and Sandy were seen going in and out of their building.

Fin. Exchange (Barry Armstrong, etc.) does business programming for WRKO and other stations. They recently hired ex-WRKO prog director Jason Wolfe for media and marketing purposes (Wolfe also is a consultant to ex WEEI host Glenn Ordway who does streaming and podcast as Big Show Unfiltered/Sports Talk Boston). I’m thinking Howie may do the show out of Money Matters’ studios in Needham. Will WRKO be aboard? Hopefully. It’s also possible some of the stations that had Money Matters syndicating Michael Graham (Graham now works in Atlanta) MAY pick up Howie incl. 830
in Worc. (which already has Howie), 1120 in Concord MA,
1390 in Plymouth etc. Not sure about the stations in
Burl VT, Lakes Region NH, Portland & Bangor ME, the Cape (WXTK), western MA (WHYN) etc. Will let you know.

Radio-Online:
>>Jason Wolfe has joined The Financial Exchange Radio Network as Chief Media and Marketing Strategist. The announcement was made by President and CEO Barry Armstrong. In his newly created role, Wolfe will be in charge of building the brand and expanding the reach of The Financial Exchange with Barry Armstrong and Kim Carrigan, in addition to developing new marketing and business partnerships that expose the show to a much larger audience. He’s presently involved in high level discussions to grow the show’s network, which most recently added WHJJ in Providence.
Wolfe, who has spent his entire radio career in Boston, served as Vice President of Programming and Operations for WEEI and WRKO from March 2006 to August 2013. He began his career with WEEI at its inception as a sports station in August 1991, and was named Program Director in 1997. His 22 year run at WEEI is among the longest, and most successful, of any programmer at one station anywhere in the country.

Yeah I know it’s Sept but one more post: Howie had Barry Armstrong from Financial Exchange on tonight to plug the fact that HC’s affiliate in Holyoke, WHYN 560 will carry that show. Financial is expanding to many other markets and we’re wondering if maybe Howie’s show will wind up there too.

Again this is just speculation but I heard that while Global
Media is syndicating Howie soon, he also MAY be working with Financial Exchange. Here are some of the stations that may take Howie (delayed in some areas?) Again, speculation.

Possibly:
560 WHYN Holyoke MA
95.1 WXTK FM Cape Cod
580 WTAG Worcester (also on 94.9 FM)
1390 WPLM AM Plymouth

610 WGIR Manch NH
96.7 WQSO Portsmouth NH
99.7 WNTK & 1490 WUVR NH/VT Upper Valley

960 WELI New Haven CT

920 WHJJ Providence

again speculation...and add others Howie already has elsewhere. Once I hear for sure I’ll let you know...again I will say now, speculation.

...and not sure about WRKO. The fill ins by Steve Malzberg
could be an audition...
