ISIS Has Seized 88 Pounds Of Uranium In Northern Iraq
Zero Hedge ^ | 7/9/14 | Tyler Durden

With the mainstream media having moved on in the news cycle to Dow 'almost' 17,000 and the 'Border Crisis' Scandal, it seems The Islamic State (the terrorists formerly known as ISIS) have stepped up their game and come out swinging... by seizing 88 pounds of nuclear material (uranium compounds) from Mosul University. As Iraq's UN Ambassador warned, "these nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, "can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction... or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts."

As Reuters reports, insurgents in Iraq have seized nuclear materials used for scientific research at a university in the country's north, Iraq told the United Nations in a letter appealing for help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad."

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University, Iraq's U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

"Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state," Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials "can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction."

"These nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, can enable terrorist groups, with the availability of the required expertise, to use it separate or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts," said Alhakim.

The US is playing down the threat (for a change)

from WikiP : Use as an area denial weapon

In November 2012, a former British Labour defence minister (Lord Gilbert), suggested that enhanced radiation reduced blast (ERRB) warheads could be detonated in the mountain region of the Afghanistan/Pakistan border to prevent infiltration. He proposed to warn the inhabitants to evacuate, then irradiate the area, making it unusable and impassible. Used in this manner, the neutron bomb(s), regardless of burst height, would release neutron activated casing materials used in the bomb, and depending on burst height, create radioactive soil activation products.

In much the same fashion as the area denial effect resulting from fission product (the substances that make up the majority of fallout) contamination in an area following a conventional surface burst nuclear explosion, as considered in the Korean War by Douglas MacArthur, it would thus be a form of Radiological warfare. With the difference with that of neutron bombs producing 1/2, or less, of the quantity of fission products when compared to the same yield pure fission bomb. Radiological warfare with neutron bombs that rely on fission primaries would therefore still produce fission fallout, albeit a comparatively “cleaner” and shorter lasting version of it in the area if airbursts were utilized, as little to no fission products would be deposited on the direct immediate area, instead becoming diluted global fallout.

However the most effective use of a neutron bomb with respect to area denial would be to encase it in a thick shell of material that could be neutron activated, and use a surface burst. In this manner the neutron bomb would be turned into a “salted bomb”, a case of Zinc-64, produced as a byproduct of depleted zinc oxide enrichment, would for example probably be the most attractive from a military point of view, as when activated the Zinc-65 that is created is a gamma emitter, with a half life of 244 days.

first strike

Well, put that idea on ice until at least January 2016.

You don’t just slap an A-bomb together with just any old Uranium pilfered from a University. That isn’t how it works.

"Bush" had a long time to command over all those operations; WHAT is uranium still doing in that country?

OR, did it make its way back in since 2009?

Can't count on President Bush to defend himself, he didn't like to while in office, he certainly wont now.

And what dirty weapons could be made with it? Who could they sell it to who would give them greater, terrible weapons in return?

Not very probable either, but it is best not to give them any ideas in that regard.

The report does not specifically indicate that the "88 pounds of nuclear material (uranium compounds)" is enriched.

Also the report does not indicate the kind of "uranium compounds" (unprocessed ore, yellowcake (mostly U3O8)? pure UO2? pure UO3? UF6? uranium hexafluoride? other uranium compounds?). There's a difference.

“Uranium?? But that can’t be..the media has said for years and years that Bush critter was a liar, that there were no WMD’s in Iraq so how can this be..could it be..the media..they lied..oh good heavens.”

I seriously doubt if the uranium obtained is more than very slightly radioactive, only useful as a bogus terror weapon. OTOH, even degraded, the chemical weapons (that don’t actually exist and never did), even degraded, would not do anyone any good and are filled with unknowns. I wouldn’t go within a mile of that place, but these people are crazy, and they are probably willing to take casualties in handling that stuff.

But, look at the bright side - the surviving Democrats might actually admit the truth.

“Americans will die and it’s the Left’s fault (probably their plan). God please help us.”

Why should he (OK, or “she”)? We don’t seem to be interested as a society in helping ourselves, and are very capable of doing so.

The idea of a ‘dirty weapon’ is mostly a fear weapon. Yeah, it will scatter radioactivity all over the place, but that can be cleaned up. It wont produce ‘wastelands’. It is Not a nuclear weapon.
