‘Staggering’: Government making $100B in improper payments every year

The U.S. government is making roughly $100 billion in improper payments every year thanks to a combination of fraud, clerical errors and insufficient IRS enforcement, according to testimony at a congressional hearing on Wednesday.

“The amounts here are absolutely staggering,” Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., said.

The problem of erroneous payments—largely from Medicare and other health care programs—is not a new one. But Mica said at the hearing of a House oversight subcommittee that federal agencies reported over $100 billion in improper payments during each of the last five years.

That’s roughly what the Obama administration spent on the Afghanistan war and other security operations last year. …

Charlie Rangel would call this “chump change”. All taxpayer dollars are “chump change” to the chump.

When the dollar gets to be worth nothing, how will they be able to do anything with it, I wonder?

The government is throwing money around like a drunk. They are drunk on power and success. Keep praying that God will end this nightmare by the end of 2014, if not before. Still scratching my head as to why it is so hard to get people to come together to pray for our nation. No politician is going to turn this around without the help of God, and that will only happen of we ask for it with repentant hearts.

It’s hard to detect fraud when the sequester cuts enforcement budgets along with everything else. When my husband was dying we had Medicare covered Home Hospice. Later when I looked at the death certificate, “died at home” had been erased and “died in hospital” Xed in its place. I phoned Medicare and asked it this might have been done to claim hospital costs that did not exist. Don’t know the results.

So what is anyone going to do about it? We've know for a long time about the waste in Fedgov spending, but bureaucrats keep doing it because they are in federal unions and just don't care as long as they get their paycheck and get their budget projections.

What's the solution other than to outlaw government unions, which will never happen?

Our health care is total gov’t controlled. My last gastro visit they paid him a whopping TWENTY EIGHT CENTS between Medicare and Tricare Life.

Tricare Life (Ret, Military over 65)
DOD MANDATE 4/14/2014For Daily Medicines

is forcing us to use either Base whose drugs are limited by size of base and is not wheel chair or handicap friendly or Express Scripts MANDATED Tricare Life. 4/14/14. Express Scripts is a sorry excuse of a provider. You never know if your order is right, what generic, what manufacture, or what country. All stuffed into your mail box UN PHOTO ID SIGNED FOR making them available to thieves and meth makers to steal. Or Neighborhood kids to access.

That is nearly $2K worth of meds every 3 months. With no guarantee that a DAW script will be DAW. And for me my Synthroid has to be Name Brand, I’m allergic to the generic.

I want to know how this company with a history of defrauding government and consumers got this multi BILLION $$ DOD contract? Money trail some where.

Good God. Really, anyone who looks at this and is shocked has no idea why conservatives are against big government, because this is inherent in the nature of big government.

It is inherent in it. It doesn’t HAVE to be, but...it is.

I think about it in the same terms as the Soviet destruction of the Aral Sea. Caused by large government, and the inherent bad decisions they necessarily make (with their damned ‘good intentions’) I see a figurative parallel.

It was killed by the USSR trying to drain it dry for irrigation (Draining our coffers for pathetically useless and destructive social programs) it turned out that something like 80% of the water drained away was wasted due to shoddy pipes and irrigation design that allowed water (money) to leak away unnoticed at every single step of the way.

But that is the way big government works.

$1,000 per family expense. No big deal to rich liberals in government.

I don’t know what to say except sympathize. When I was taking my late husband to VA for Alzheimer’s, we went to the pharmacy room to pick up his perscriptions and paid the copay. Now that he is gone I do the same at Kaiser Permanente for my thyroid meds. If you have to use this delivery service, why couldn’t they arrange to deliver to the base with a designated pick up point where people would present ID for their meds once they are delivered. UPS has tracking system, why not these guys.
