When I was a kid, people would take their beds, mattresses and pillows out on the lawn to soak in the sun all day on weekends during the summer. This would kill the bedbugs and their eggs.................

We had families who would wash their mattresses with swimming pool water. The Chlorine killed everything. We still clean players hockey and football gear by tossing it in the pool then letting it dry on the lawn.
