A spark of good news from the Mideast
CNN Opinion ^ | 7/9/14 | Frida Ghitis

A recent poll of 14 Muslim-majority countries by the Pew Research Center has come up with startling, highly encouraging results: Muslims are becoming increasingly opposed to extremism.

Muslims are turning against organizations that support violence and terrorism. Public approval for suicide bombings is way down, and so is support for the likes of al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas and Boko Haram.

It's a dramatic change from the days just after 9/11 when any Westerner traveling through the Muslim Middle East and Asia could see troubling signs. I remember the Osama bin Laden T-shirts flying off the shelves in the bazaars, the burning Twin Towers shirts hawked by street vendors, the jaw-dropping conversations, even with some educated people who found justification for every manner of terrorist activity.

At long last, that ideology is significantly receding. While extremists are making territorial gains, their ideology is losing ground. They are losing the war of ideas.

I don't know if one poll suggests "significantly receding"....

Put me in the "I'll believe it when I see it camp"

If their “idea” is the complete destruction of civilization, then it’s no wonder that they are losing the war of ideas.

LOL. You can take a look at the Palestinians cheering the rockets raining down of rockets on Israel. I guess that isn’t extremism.

Notice Samantha Power has been completely silent?

She’s trying to force Israel to fix this situation, which
she will use to further stir up the ME.

CNN just found out terrorism has lost popularity in their lilliputian demographic. Therefore, the latest poll...

HEY CNN: WHEN YOU CAN AFFORD TO HIRE A HOLON CORRESPONDENT WHO CAN PRONOUNCE “HOLON” YOUR SPOTS MIGHT BE WORTH MORE THAN THE PRICE OF A NIGHT OUT AT McDONALDS.

One look at Candy Crowley and everybody tunes out. To listen to her silly leftist balancing act is to swear off CNN forever.

The new survey was taken in the spring, before ISIS swept into Iraq from Syria and before the latest outbreak of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

There's a pony in there somewhere. If public opinion is changing, it appears to have no impact on the terrorists. AQ is growing stronger throughout the ME and North Africa.

Public opinion matters most in countries that can vote the thugs out.

That’s not the case in the ME...

And the correct term is ‘radical muslim’...

“....startling, highly encouraging results: Muslims are becoming increasingly opposed to extremism.”

.
They seem to be peed off because their co-religionists are targeting them, but I see no sign that they are also opposed to extremism against Christians and other non-Muslims?

Not until we see muzzies in the streets, protesting other muzzies’ murderous behavior, should we give credence to that report.

A lot of it depends on how the question was asked. Many people will not answer revealing questions truthfully.

If the ‘moderate’ muslims are against extremism, they’re being as noisy about it as spiders in the cellar.

I think Brigitte Gabriel said it best and to paraphrase 'they are irrelevent'.

It's the radicals that matter. And they alone will control Islam and what is done in its name.

“Islamic extremism has been morphing from an ideological rallying cry to a brutally oppressive fighting force in many parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia.”

Which is all Islam ever was. Everything Islam touches, it destroys.

If true this would be a noteworthy development. However, you can bet your bottom dinar that it won’t reduce the fanaticism of those who do believe in violence.

I had to laugh at your cynicism, because it echoes my own. “Support for suicide bombings has PLUMMETED from 79.8% to a mere 77.1%, can you believe it??!!! Yet after each election, they will brandish their purple ink-smeared forefingers and put in place one more Sharia Compliant, Taliban Embracing, Historic Artifact Destroyer, Honor Killing, Jew Hating DICTATOR. They have yet to connect the ‘dots’ of cause and effect.

Well, every suicide bomber is also a Darwin Award candidate, eventually it should have some effect on the gene pool.
