Berkeley Dispensaries Must Give Free Weed to Low-Income Patients

In a landmark decision to serve the underprivileged of the East Bay, the Berkeley City Council UNANIMOUSLY voted last week to provide small amounts of free medical marijuana to low-income and homeless patients. Whoa.

According to the new ordinance, dispensaries in the area must give away weed equal to at least 2 percent of their sales to the appropriate demographic—defined as half the area’s median annual income: $32,000 or less for an individual and $46,000 for a family of four.

"It's an equity issue," council member Darryl Moore explained to Reuters. "We want to ensure that those who are in need have access to the medication necessary to treat their condition."

Plus, the freebies can’t be schwag weed. The law includes a clause that the “medical cannabis provided under this section shall be the same quality on average as marijuana dispensed to other members.”

But don’t think you can just walk up to any dispensary's window with an empty hand and expect to get irie goods; only card-carrying patients with prescriptions will have dibs on free mary jane.

"It’s about the best medicine for the lowest possible cost for people in need,” Charles Pappas, a member of the city’s Medical Cannabis Commission, added.

Although the decision has received a lot of attention over the past week, it’s nothing new for Berkeley. In fact, the Berkeley Patient has been doling out free cannabis to the poor for more than 15 years.

As part of the vote, the city also increased the number of dispensaries allowed from three to four, and will consider amending it to six by the end of 2015. The ordinance will not become law until final approval in August.

“The next “Human Right””

Yep - This law forces the business to give their products away for free.

I don’t read it as being paid by taxpayer money

What’s to stop Berkeley from making Chevron GAs Stations give away a percentage of their gross sales directly to its customers?
And not call it a tax!

Good news for Tommy Hall, former 13th Floor Elevator.

The free pot will make his welfare payments go further.

So much for those residents diligently working on a weed-free lawn.

Yo, dude, that’s great! But it’s not enough. I need a bong some matches and someone to kick start my lungs.

“the Berkeley City Council UNANIMOUSLY voted last week to provide small amounts of free medical marijuana to low-income and homeless patients”

Since it’s a government handout of free weed for the indigent, it’ll probably be Mexican Brick Weed containing mostly stems and seeds. Then there’ll be a big lawsuit that the poor aren’t receiving free Purple Kush or the like. So it goes. Especially in California. I would think Dennis Miller might have an interesting take on this on his next chat with O’Reilly.

Doctors and big pharma already hand out various pills that get you high. All on the taxpayer dime. They don’t cure anything and are all far more impairing, toxic and addictive than pot. Then once these people get sick from the toxic pills, we pay for their medical treatment.

If you want to see the real dole junkies, look outside a local pharmacy in a working class neighborhood just before the doors open. You’ll see ghost white junkies lining up, shaking and grabbing at the doors.

In my neighborhood there aren’t as many as there used to be since the pharmacies now offer free deliveries (after neighbor complaints). The junkies now just sit home in their taxpayer funded apartment and get their pills delivered. All on our dime.

Far worse things have been going on for decades and free Rx pot is nothing in comparison.

Wait until they tell the same thing to McDonald’s—Jack in the Box—Wendy’s—and every other business in the city.

Think I am kidding? Just wait.....

Meanwhile, other pot sales clubs are being told they can ONLY sell what they PRODUCE ON THE SAME PROPERTY!!!

Hard to grow anything on a cement surface.

All you need is water and electricity.

You can grow several pounds of pot every month in one bedroom sized room.

Now that I could live with. The homeless guys would be all over the pot shops like flies on a dog pile. I know the pot shop owners would love that. “Giving back”. LOL!

In related news, Ralph’s and Krogers now must give free milk and bread to the homeless as well.

Target may be forced to give free clothing and lawn chairs to them also.

The new commercial slogan for businesses in the USA is “To Each According To His Need.”

Eventually to be replaced with “Arbeit Macht Frei.”
