A Ukrainian Interior Ministry official said at least 30 servicemen were killed Friday after pro-Russia rebels fired on them with missiles.

Zoryan Shkiryak, an adviser to the interior minister, said authorities would react swiftly to punish the perpetrators.

"They will be destroyed or captured and be made answerable to Ukrainian law," Shkiryak said.

Defense Ministry spokesman Vladislav Seleznyov said the attack was on a forward base in a village near the Russian border and confirmed there had been heavy casualties, but did not give any specific figure.

The base was located near one of three border crossings whose closure Russian officials had announced Friday.

This has been floating around on Twitter for several hours, but this is the first Western Media story about it.

Reports of Casualties are varying wildly. Ukraine admits "at least" 30 killed, while Ukrainian Hromadske TV is saying 450KIA. Ukraine only reports Army Casualties, they do not acknowledge Nat Guard or Militia, so this could be true, although other reports of around 450 "casualties" is more likely.

This comes right on the heels of two of the Right Sector Militia Battalions being nearly wiped out by the rebels, one near where this happened, in Southern Lugansk Province, near Saur-Moglia.

Poroshenko was throwing a fit about this on TV this morning.

Ukraine will slowly be bled dry unless they can make Putin and Russia feel the sting, cost and consequences of war.

A large number of Ukrainians slaughtered defending their country against a Russian backed putsch. God forbid Poroshenko should get angry.

But to you it should be described with the often derisive term "throwing a fit".

There are also several reports on Twitter that the Pro-Kiev “Donetsk”(Donbas-2???) militia group is surrounded and cut off by the rebels near Mount Saur Mogila.

This is the same area where Semenchenko’s Right Sector militia Battalion was destroyed a couple of days ago.

There is a huge Monument on this hill, that commemorates the 23,000 Soviet soldiers that died trying to take this area from the Nazi’s during WW2. It looks as if history is repeating, in a way.

I remember back when Ukraine wanted Russian troops pulled back from the border. So why are Ukranian troops so close to the border?

“So why are Ukranian troops so close to the border?”

It appears that Some Russian Units are moving closer to the border area. There have been several tweets today about Russian vehicles being seen with “Peacekeeper” symbols on them.

Sure. What justification does Ukraine have to defend their border crossings against attack, occupation and invasion.

MORE:
Apparently this field was a rally area for both the 79th, and 24th brigades.

Other Reports:

The Col. in charge of retaking the ATO-area border posts, Col. Igor Momot, was killed, along with his entire entourage, in an ambush.

Attacks on Donetsk airport have started again today. Yesterday, the UK troops repelled the attack, but lost several of their heavy pieces. They are dug in around the tower area, and the fuel farm, both of which have large earth berms around them.

Vostok is defending the approaches to the airport, and they are heavily mined, so getting them any help will be difficult.

Kiev did manage to part of an airdrop in to them this morning. They dropped two pallets from a high altitude. One fell on the airport, one did not. Video of the drop. http://youtu.be/xy-3HsjQNGM

Another attack aircraft was shot down near Perevalsk, adding to the the two SU-25’s claimed yesterday near Seversk.

The rebels have gotten a LOT more active in the last two days.

Both countries should be at their border defending it. Ukraine has a problem that some of those areas have declared independence, so what are they doing there?

Obvious question. Yes, I believe US troops should be on our southern border. Next obvious question answered before asked: If some of our southern areas are so taken over by people who'd rather be part of another country or independent, they should be allowed to do that.

EXCELLENT map of the tactical situation in the Rebellion areas. Note how vunerable the Kiev units moving in the South are? The red star marks where the battle was that is mentioned above.

Twitter Report:
“BREAKING It appears that the NAF are closing the exit door on Ukraine troops trapped in the Donetsk pocket along Russia border.”

These attacks appear much more organized and coordinated than anything the rebels have managed before. There are several different militia groups involved, over a wide area.

Rope-a-dope??

Areas don't declare independence, people in areas do. In this case most likely a minority of people aided by a foreign country, Russia declared "independence".

... they should be allowed to do that.

No they shouldn't.

Side Note:

A War-time wedding in Donetsk yesterday. The groom is a rebel officer known by the nickname “Motorola”, because he talks too much, and was always ready with a quote to give the Russian Media in Skaviansk. Note the pistol that the bride is wearing over the wedding dress. She is also a militia member.
Strelkov is also at the wedding.

The Russkies in their state controlled media, as well as the Kremlin propagandists on the web, are already making Strelkov, the GRU guy in the Donbass, the scapegoat for failure, even speculating that he plans to march on Moscow, or secretly has a Jewish passport (a weird anti-semitism thing), or is in fact working for NATO, depending on the guy they have on. Alexandr Dugin, a "National Bolshevik" and promoter of a genuine "fascist fascism" for mother Russia, and one of the most visible supporters of a war to take over Ukraine, was let go from his University position, which he blames on Putin. The Russian media is now actively representing the war no longer as a war for Novorussiya, but as an unrelated conflict in another country. The Russkies are indeed feeling the sting and are in a mad rush to lay the blame as far away from themselves as possible. Tcrlaf is an insane Putinista, so don't take his frothing at the mouth over the death of every Ukrainian too seriously as a sign of Ukraine's imminent defeat. Better to see how the Muscovites themselves are taking things:

"In separate posts we’ve covered the speculation from both liberal opposition and ultranationalist regarding the possible ambitions of pro-Russian separatist leader Col. Igor Strelkov; the antics of leftist ultranationalist Sergei Kurginyan and his denunciation of Col. Igor Strelkov for losing Slavyansk, and his riotous press conference with the “people’s governor” Pavel Gubarev in which the fact of Russian aid to the rebels nevertheless slipped out; and the speculation regarding the intrigues of Kremlin “grey cardinal” Vyacheslav Surkov"

http://www.interpretermag.com/russia-this-week-novorossiya-supporters-in-moscow-denounce-strelkov/

That link has other useful links to read up on the madness and internal fighting going on with the Muscovites lately.

By the way, a note on the strange world of Russian politics. That Sergei Kurginyan, described as a "leftist" AND an "ultranationalist." He is, apparently, a self-described National Bolshevik (think national socialist) and promoter of "Red" Orthodoxy (communist Russian Christian Orthodoxy), on top of being a Kremlin propagandist. Tcrlaf and the idiot Putinistas never shut up about the Ukrainians supposedly being run by Nazis, when there are literal Nazis in Russia frothing at the mouth on Russkie state controlled television.
