Better off by every measure? Not by these, Mr. President . . .

Facts are stubborn things.

I guess you have to give President Obama this: No fact will throw him off of his talking points. If you're impressed by politicians who know how to "stay on message," then I guess Obama is your kind of guy. I prefer people who do their jobs well to those who don't but continue to insist they do, however, and I suspect you do too.

Obama was in rare form the other day when speaking in Colorado. He actually insisted: "By almost every measure, we're better off than we were when I took office. By almost every measure!"

Maybe if he repeats it a few more times, he can do a better job of convincing himself. But he's going to have a hard time convincing the rest of us given facts like these:

You heard about the GDP report for the first quarter of 2014, yes? It was a startling 2.9 percent contraction. Economic growth would be the one thing that would give us a chance to deal with our structural budget deficit and start creating real wealth in this nation again. And it is not happening under Obama, who has seen the annualized growth rate during his presidency languish around a meager 2.0 percent - about half what we need.

When Obama took office, 32 million people were on food stamps. Today, it's 50 million. Better? Only if you're a Democrat who figures that more people dependent on government means more votes for Democrats, which is what you're after.

The labor participation rate has dropped from 66 percent before the recession to just 62.8 percent today. People have either stopped looking for work or they've been forced to take part-time jobs because that's all they can find. And about two-thirds of the drop has come from young people dropping out of the work force.

By the way, in terms of job creation, we're still 400,000 jobs below where we stood before the recession started. How can you square that with Obama's claim that we're covering faster than anyone else? You can't. It's simple nonsense. The recession technically ended five years ago, and typically a very steep recession would be followed by a very sharp recovery. Not this time. Because we have an administration that abhors growth-friendly policies and in fact used the recession as an excuse to implement command-and-control type measures that inhibit growth.

And I haven't even gotten into the disaster that's ObamaCare. You know of the problems we've seen so far. Check back in with me in September when we see the next round of premium hikes.

So, Mr. President, you can say whatever you want - and clearly you will, regardless of the facts. But the facts cannot be denied. We are far, far worse off than we were when Obama took office. And because he refuses to change the policies that have brought us to this sorry point, it's hard to see how it gets better any time soon.

Staying “on message” is easy if you are surrounded by phalanxes of spokespersons, flacks, spin-meisters, armed guards, security fences, audience-screeners, walk-backers, and “Jorn0lists” so not a single nay-sayer can get within a half mile of you.
