‘I,’ ‘Me,’ ‘My’—Obama Uses First Person Singular 199 Times in Speech Vowing Unilateral Action

Not counting instances when he quoted a letter from a citizen or cited dialogue from a movie, President Barack Obama used the first person singular--including the pronouns "I" and "me" and the adjective "my"--199 times in a speech he delivered Thursday vowing to use unilateral executive action to achieve his policy goals that Congress would not enact through the normal, constitutional legislative process.

“It is lonely, me just doing stuff,” Obama said at the speech in Austin, Texas, according to the official transcript and video posted on the White House website.

“I’m just telling the truth now,” Obama told the crowd. “I don't have to run for office again, so I can just let her rip. And I want to assure you, I’m really not that partisan of a guy.”

Take a drink every time he uses the personal pronoun.

I wonder how Obama will express himself when he stands before the Living God. Will it be “I did this... it was my idea..etc.” or will he try the blame game(someone else did that, not me).

You didn't build that!

There’s another word in the presidential word cloud that begins with ‘I’.

IMPEACHMENT!

Oh, Lord, it’s hard to be humble
When you’re perfect in every way
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
‘Cause I get better lookin’ each day

To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man
Oh, Lord, it’s hard to be humble
But I’m doin’ the best that I can

Obama said, “I can't stand by with partisan gridlock that's the result of cynical political games that threaten the hard work of millions of Americans,” said Obama. “I’m not just going to stand by and say, okay, that's--I guess that's the way it is. Whenever and wherever I have the power, the legal authority to help families like yours, even if Congress is not doing anything, I will take that opportunity.”

Out of curiosity I wanted to see what a speech by an early president was like. George Washington would be kinda hack so I went John Quincy Adams. Found his speeches and picked the second annual address at random. Found this passage about his dealing with the mean old congress:

Of the subjects recommended to Congress at their last session, some were then definitively acted upon. Others, left unfinished, but partly matured, will recur to your attention without needing a renewal of notice from me. The purpose of this communication will be to present to your view the general aspect of our public affairs at this moment and the measures which have been taken to carry into effect the intentions of the legislature as signified by the laws then and heretofore enacted.

Wow, they sound almost identical. /sarc

This made me think of an episode in "Yes Minister" (great BBC series), wherein Sir Humphrey (chief bureaucrat) is reluctant to admit to Hacker (his Minister) that he's the blame for something.

"Sir Humphrey: The identity of the official whose alleged responsibility for this hypothetical oversight that has been the subject of recent discussion is not shrouded in quite such impenetrable obscurity as certain previous disclosures may have led you to assume; but not to put too fine a point on it, the individual in question is, it may surprise you to learn, one whom your present interlocutor is in the habit of defining by means of the perpendicular pronoun.

Hacker: I beg your pardon?

Sir Humphrey: It was... I. "

It seems that Obama is overly fond of the perpendicular pronoun.

Translation: “I’ve been lying the whole time”.

““It is lonely, me just doing stuff,” Obama said ———”

Not one ounce of class, not one.

Can you visualize Ike or FDR saying something like this?

Pathetic.

If I know myself and I do know me, there would not be any reason for me to show that I am above
everything, but when I know myself better than most know me then I can
better know how I can show myself that I am myself Superior.

Sincerely, Me, Myself, And I..

Yes, “Yes, Minister” was a great series. It was followed by “Yes, Prime Minister.”
