Competing claims...
As I noted on the other thread, both may very well be true.
Kiev mounted a large offensive to both the north and south of Lugansk in the morning, and likely broke the airport siege.
They pushed into the south suburbs, but the coordination fell apart. The push to take the heights to the south and east of the city failed.
Video evidence shows a large counter-attack against advancing Kiev troops just before dark, and many fires in the area of the airport, as well as the main North-South Highway. Reports say that the rebels hit them hard, and they weren’t ready for a counter-attack. LOTS of pics and vids of burning AFV’s are online now.
Rebel accounts have tweeted for several hours that they have control of the airport now.
Itar-Tass is now reporting the airport has been taken by the rebels.
We’ll see what the morning brings. I expect heavy air raids around Lugansk.
