They turned East Africa and Central Africa as far south as the Congo into slaving zones, in the process extinguishing the indigenous African regimes of the area. Afrocentrists love talking about the various African empires but are always fuzzy about how they went away, leaving it to their audience to assume it was because of the Evil White Man.

I took university courses in African history and they are strangely silent on why the great university cities such as Timbuktu became economic backwaters long before the white man arrived.
They get very uncomfortable if you point out that it happened at precisely the same time Islam arrived.
