Anyone counting on international efforts to demilitarize Gaza should, however, remember UN Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
That resolution included a clause stipulating that the area from the Israeli border to the Litani River be free of any armed personnel, assets and weapons other than those of the Government of Lebanon.
And the result: Before the war Hezbollah had some 6,000 missiles; today that number is estimated at more than 60,000.
My "demilitarization plan" would therefore be:
Starting at the border, for every rocket Hamas fires into Israel, Israel bulldozes a path 1 bulldozer wide (say, 4 meters, for convenient reference), parallel to the border. Each successive path lies 4 meters further into Gaza. Once bulldozed, any path stays that way, indefinitely. Repeat treatment until effective.
(Yes, I realize Israel might have to purchase some more bulldozers to keep up... An effective tunnel destroying program would be needed in advance of bulldozings, too.)
I don’t think that’s going to be Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan ... :-) ... unless you’ve been doing some back-channel communications with Netanyahu ... :-0 ...
