Central American kids make immigration reform even harder

The thousands of children from Central America who have streamed across the U.S. border over the past few months have overwhelmed border state institutions and issued a major moral challenge to the country. They've also endangered the chance of getting comprehensive immigration reform passed this year.

Comprehensive immigration reform was already going to be an uphill battle. Though the Senate has passed legislation that would strengthen border security while providing a path to citizenship to the estimated 13 million undocumented immigrants who already live within our borders, the Republican-dominated House of Representatives had been unenthusiastic at best and resistant at worst.

The loss of House Minority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., to a challenge from a Tea Party-backed primary opponent further complicated the political calculus for immigration reform in an election year. Even Democrats were moving away from talking about immigration reform on the stump, although they had made it their top domestic priority in 2013 and 2014.

The flood of young immigrants is going to make comprehensive reform far more difficult - even though they should be dealt with as separate issues.

The estimated 13 million undocumented immigrants who have been in this country for years deserve a way to attain legal status, especially since the Senate bill is tough but fair - certainly not "amnesty," as reform opponents have called it. (To qualify, immigrants in legal limbo would have to pay a fine and fees, along with any back taxes owed, pass a background check and, finally, get in line with everyone else who wants to be a citizen.)

Meanwhile, the flood of young immigrants is relatively recent, and should be treated as a pressing humanitarian crisis.

6 or 7 million illegals being flooded in before election day is much more important to Obama than “immigration reform”

“Even Democrats were moving away from talking about immigration reform on the stump, although they had made it their top domestic priority in 2013 and 2014.”

That’s because we’re entering into (mid-term) election season and the Democrat lawmakers have to shift back into “hoodwink-mode” to make enough of their electorate ‘think’ that they are conservative-enough to pull the lever for them. After that brief interlude, those that survive will continue pushing for their socialist agenda — and that included so-called immigration reform.

Central American kids make immigration reform amnesty even harder

The silver lining in the dark cloud known as 0bama.

Do those things and illegal aliens will deport themselves and pay for the trip.
