Mikulski: Policy changes not needed for border crisis
The Hill ^ | July 16, 2014 | Alexander Bolton

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) signaled Wednesday she will not amend a 2008 human trafficking law with the emergency spending bill addressing the Texas border crisis.

Mikulski also questioned Republican calls to deploy the National Guard to help secure the Southern border.

She argued the 2008 William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Act did not cause the surge of unaccompanied minors from Central America, as some critics contend. Instead, she said gang violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador and human smugglers known as coyotes are to blame.

“Our problem is not the children. Our problem is what causes the children to come. We have to go after what causes the children to come and that’s the drug dealers, the smugglers, the coyotes, those that are engaging in such violent crime,” she said on the Senate floor.

Mikulski noted that many of the children apprehended at the border turn themselves in. They often come to border control officers with pieces of paper bearing their names and then are placed into holding cells.

“What’s our national guard going to do?” she said. “When these little kids cross the Rio Grande, they’re going to go right up to that soldier, put their arms around his or her leg and say, ‘I need to be safe, can you help me?’

Mikulski is following Dingy Harry, it's her way or the hiway.

If this is the Rats game plan they shouldn't get even one GOP vote in either house.

Our problem is not the children. Our problem is what causes the children to come.

God save us from politicians this confused or devious. In essence, she advocates the U.S. taxpayer has ownership of the internal problems of other nations along with the right and the duty to solve such problems.

“When these little kids cross the Rio Grande, they’re going to go right up to that soldier, put their arms around his or her leg and say, ‘I need to be safe, can you help me?’

depends on whether that 'little kid' has a face full of gang tattoos. And yes, I will help that child get home - to their own home and their own government. Who are we to steal another country's children? The politicians talking so freely about us 'adopting' these children, as if HHS is now the SPCA giving away puppies, turns my stomach. It's so wrong on so many levels.

This dingbat turns 78 this month and has been in the Senate 30 freakin’ years. Yet another poster child for term limits.

The way to assure border security is a coup de’tat.

At this point in time, there is no other remedy.

You bet she’s a poster child for term limits. I shudder to think the damage she’s done to this country.

She’s right about what they’ll do with the NG. They’ll get the soldiers to give them a ride to the border patrol office. Unless they’re put on the border with the order “Stop all crossings with force necessary.”
