Vocal conservative commentator and former Alaska governor, Sarah Palin, will share her take on women’s leadership issues during a visit to the Permian Basin next year.

The John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute’s Distinguished Lecture Series is bringing Palin to the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. The lecture, “Groundbreakers, mavericks and trailblazers: How women are showing 21st century leadership,” is free and open to the public.

“What better example than Sarah Palin to come to us to talk about typical challenges and barriers, and how to break them down and show the example of demonstrated leadership in action?” said institute Executive Director Bob Brescia. “I thought Sarah Palin was a good exemplar of that.”

Palin, governor of Alaska from December 2006 until her resignation in July 2009, has since taken on the role of commentator, political action committee founder and best-selling author. The 2008 Republican nominee for vice president most recently found herself in the national spotlight over her comments calling for President Barack Obama’s impeachment. Many Republican leaders, including Speaker of the House John Boehner and Palin’s former running mate Sen. John McCain, have expressed their disagreement with her comments.

Brescia said choosing Palin wasn’t about how much she’s appeared in the news, but about her leadership abilities, which she has demonstrated consistently, both while in office and since then as she has been able to “mobilize commitment over a shared goal.”

“In order to mobilize commitment in today’s world, young people, who tend to gravitate toward the channels of social media, you have to be present where they’re present,” he said. “Sarah is present. You don’t have to go far to look for Sarah Palin.”

Keeping the Permian Basin “totally engaged in the national conversation” is a goal for Brescia when choosing guest speakers.

“We try very hard to maintain relevance to leadership issues on a national and regional basis, and to bring personalities that resonate in our area and for which there would be considerable interest,” he said.

Brescia said he’s confident the event will be a very popular one, and “interesting speakers,” such as Palin, tend to receive a good reception.

Brescia also expects a strong turnout on Oct. 16 when John Walsh, former host of “America’s Most Wanted” and host of “The Hunt” on CNN, speaks about human trafficking.

Walsh will be joined by State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, Traffick911 CEO Deena Graves and retired Fort Worth cold case detective Manny Reyes. “Confronting the growing affliction of human trafficking,” set for 7 p.m., is also free and open to the public.
