Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday blamed the Ukrainian government for the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, saying the state bears some responsibility for fighting that may have led to the jet’s apparent downing by a surface-to-air missile.

“I would like to point out in this regard, that this tragedy would not have occurred if there was peace in that land, at least, if hostilities had not resumed in the South-East of Ukraine,” Putin said. “And without question, the state over whose territory this took place, bears responsibility for this awful tragedy.”

“Deleted posts suggest Ukraine rebels downed Malaysian jet in error”

IMO, it was Putin’s deliberate response to the sanctions, most if not all targeting Russian missile makers.

"Does the Ukraine have sophisticated missile systems that could take down a plane at 30,000 feet or so??"

Ummm, yes they do.

The system that was used has not been ID'd positively as to origin, but the 'separatists' had captured at least one battery from a Ukrain base, so it conceivably could have been that one.

Obama will say much the same when those MANPADS he “lost” take out a plane on approach.

Putin, ya goofed. You armed idiots who just gave you a black eye. Say nothing next time. There’s no way to put a positive spin on your part in killing a planeload of civilians.

Of course. Some of the old Soviet arms were actually manufactured in the Ukraine. Ukrainians did destroy some of the old Russian gear. Like unfortunately the Russian nukes the Ukrainians possessed. If they still had their nukes, they would still have Crimea.
