Sounds like the pro-Russian amateurish rebels thought it was a Ukrainian military cargo plane. Airlines should not fly over countries at war.

Yep, the whole scene is right out of what happened over Lockerbie--only worse because the plane was brought down by a explosive warhead from a missile many times more powerful than the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988. That's why the debris field is so unusually large.

My contention this shootdown was a horrible case if mistaken identity might be more right than people think. The current operational version of the 9K37 Buk battlefield SAM system is a very sophisticated piece of military hardware, and the separatists who operated it may not have the proper training to make sure the missile wasn't tracking a non-military target.
