I’m so worried that someone might
do this to my son.
How do we prevent this kind of
thing? It looks like the father
trusted the perp to some extent,
allowing him to play video games
with his son up to the point
of discovering the abuse, which
had been going on for 3 years!

Don’t let a 15-year-old hang out unsupervised with your 8-year-old. Pay attention to any physical or emotional signs from your kid. There ‘s just no guarantee, sadly.

You just have to keep an eye out for who is around your son, and never leave him alone with someone who has the potential for sexually abusing, meaning anybody who is above the age of puberty because 14 year olds can do it just as much as 30 year olds. When your kid gets to be above 14 then you generally don't have to worry as they can handle themselves, but for a kid who is younger than that? No way. No way in hell would I ever allow my 12 year old son to be left alone with a kid who is 14 or above. What would they be doing with a kid who is 2 years older than them anyway?

The perv was “a family friend, almost a relative.”
I think pop culture and media has undermined our collective “freak detector.” I’ve heard people claiming they trust their “Gay” friends with their children. Unfortunately, most homosexuals were left with Mommy and Daddy’s “Gay” friends at an early age.
This poor kid is likely to grow up with homosexual and pedophilia tendencies.

(Why do you need a fire extinguisher when you can call the fire department?)
