Huh? Ronald Reagan was a democrat. Charleston Hesston was a democrat. Thomas Sowell was a liberal. It is quite a broad brush you paint with.

I pretty much fit in that “never a leftist, not even as a teenager” mold myself - but Ronaldus Maximus himself was a “liberal” in 1950, and Thomas Sowell was a marxist until he was about 30. So I think we can all profit from a little humility . . .
