S.F. offers welcome to immigrant children

San Francisco politicians love to opine on major national and international issues - even if their stance will have no bearing on anything other than bolstering their own egos. Impeach George W. Bush! End the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan!

But this time, City Hall officials have seized on a significant issue - the swell of undocumented children from Central America crossing the U.S. border - that they just might be able to influence in a real way. The Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to fund relief efforts for children arriving in the city, according to immigration advocates, at a pace of 200 to 250 every month.

including sending city lawyers to the border to represent newly arrived youth

um. isn't that counter to Federal immigration law? that illegals cannot be represented legally by the government in immigration proceedings?
