Russia was threatening a “Serious” response to any new sanctions, including freezing the considerable assets of BP and Shell, in Russia.

We’ll see how this plays out, in the next few days.

If Putin had not run Exxon out of Siberia over a decade ago he might have had some actual leverage with these threats against foreign oil companies. But BP is a British company and Shell is a Dutch company. The Obama administration isn't going to lift a finger to help those companies and their own governments will not break ranks with the US now that Putin has them all scared of him.
