A sane sober, responsible person isn't going to become a pothead. Or an alcoholic. Or an opioid abuser.
By definition, these are not the people who become doped up druggies.
As I recall, it is legal to use pot in Colorado. Not mandatory.
If pot were legalized in your state tomorrow, would you go get stoned? I doubt it.
Medical marijuana is legal where I'm at and I have a severe spinal injury (documented with records, a surgery, and everything) and I'm not running out to get a card.
Why? Because I'm a sane, sober, responsible person. Nobody's going to turn me into a druggie.
The important point here is that when others consume pot recreationally, the rest of us pay.
This happens when you have a large population of indigents.
And how many of those indigents have other issues such as mental problems which might make them a burden to the local resources. Or worse, dangerous.
They come to Colorado because they can buy and smoke pot without a threat of arrest.
We’d like attract a much better type of person. Unfortunately people who smoke pot and do other drugs are not the kind of people we want here.
If a person has a tendency to addiction, genetically or otherwise, it becomes very easy to to succumb to unintended consequences. To some, legal means it’s OK. Since we have over 50% of the voting public vote to elect Obama - TWICE - it is not too much of a stretch for them to say, “what the hell, it’s legal” and disregard the consequences.
