Qatar's Purchase Of Billions Of US Weaponry — And Support For Hamas — Shows How Awkward Foreign Policy Can Be

July 23, 2014

Qatar recently cemented an enormous weapons deal with the United States. But this week, the tiny, resource-rich Gulf kingdom with outsized geopolitical ambitions — and a seemingly bottomless pocketbook — might be setting itself up for more problematic relations with the U.S.

Last week, Qatar closed the largest sale of American weaponry so far this year, purchasing $11 billion worth of Patriot missile batteries and Apache attack helicopters. The sale revealed that Qatar hasn't exactly been lacking in strategic daring in the wake of its failed bet on Muslim Brotherhood-linked political movements throughout the Middle East, and its subsequent fallout in diplomatic relations with neighboring Gulf monarchies.

But the Gaza-Hamas conflagration casts a problematic light on the Qataris, who have been one of Hamas's most reliable international partners.

Then-Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani made the first official visit to Hamas-controlled Gaza of any head of state in October of 2012. During the visit, he pledged over $400 million in assistance to the territory, and some significant but currently-unknown amount of that money has ended up in Hamas's pocket.

Jonathan Schanzer, the vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Business Insider that Qatar is "believed to be the primary financier of Hamas," which has estimated annual operating expenses of around $1 billion.

Yes, it’s nice for the balance of payments to sell weapons. The companies involved lobby to the tune of millions of dollars. But it’s probably best to stop all weapons sales to the middle east. Instead, increase our oil and gas production and sell that world wide. It will further reduce their power and influence. (Remember we sold scrap metal to Japan. We did get most of it back, but at the cost of thousands of lives.)

“Obama sends $47 million of our tax money to the Hamas scum.”

Expect the House to begin Impeachment proceedings against Obama for violating two laws.

1. Providing funding for a terrorist organization (Hamas ).

2. Expenditure of federal funds to Hamas without Congressional approval.

No you pronounce the name of this sovereign country erroneously as “GUTTER” or as some wrongly say “CUTTER”. THe actual name of the country in country is QA — TAR.. Sounds like KAH TAR. I am amazed at the ignorance of the media and others who mispronounce the simple name of this country.

I couldn’t care less how the name of that gutter is pronounced.

Crap hole or Nuclear test site would be fine names for the place.

“2. Expenditure of federal funds to Hamas without Congressional approval”

I know congress holds the purse strings, so I was wondering how Hamas got our tax dollar. How did he go over congress?

Aw, come on. Lighten up! Awkward? This IS the Iranian Jarrett & company’s foreign policy. They have been on the mark with every decision they’ve made. They support those who want to destroy our nation and kill our people. They are traitors and should be tried as such.

Simple to me except the banks control the politicians. What if every patriotic American withdrew all their money from the banks and sold all their stocks then started their own little town banks. It’s a Wonderful Life if you are willing to give it all up.
