Leaked “transcript”: Obama demands unilateral ceasefire from Netanyahu [Yes, UNILATERAL!]

David Harsanyi and Philip Klein are right. No one talks like this. This might be a fair summary of what they said but it’s obviously not a transcript.

Barack Obama: I demand that Israel agrees to an immediate, unilateral ceasefire and halt all offensive activities, in particular airstrikes.

Benjamin Netanyahu: And what will Israel receive in exchange for a ceasefire?

BO: I believe that Hamas will cease its rocket fire — silence will be met with silence.

BN: Hamas broke all five previous ceasefires. It’s a terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of Israel.

BO: I repeat and expect Israel to stop all its military activities unilaterally. The pictures of destruction in Gaza distance the world from Israel’s position.

It goes on, with O allegedly promising to have our terror-supporting friends Turkey and Qatar mediate with Hamas once Israel ceases fire, to which Netanyahu supposedly says, “I protest because Hamas can continue to launch rockets and use tunnels for terror attacks.” “I protest”? Jeffrey Goldberg imagines the rest of the conversation:

Obama: "Bring me the leader of the Jews." Bibi: "I am that leader." Obama: "I demand forthwith a knish." Bibi: "I refuse you a knish."

Another possibility: Maybe the “transcript” is just a few translated iterations of an actual transcript. Apparently an American source provided Israeli media with the original transcript, then it was translated into Hebrew, and then possibly translated back into English by someone else, leading to the odd, stilted rhetoric here.

One problem, which I do not take credit for thinking of but read somewhere, is that you cannot have a ceasefire in and of itself. Israel has mobilized its army and “invaded” Gaza. Troops cannot sit and hold positions, when they do that they are just sitting ducks for mortar attacks and sniper fire among others. Troops need to move, they need to advance.

So asking for a cease-fire is not even a practical request. Obama is asking for Israel to withdraw its troops from Gaza - something they could do, but probably should not do having gone this far they should destroy more tunnels and/or take Gaza city.

Another problem that is rarely mentioned is that Hamas is not a signatory to the Geneva Accords. Their soldiers are irregular militia and do not wear uniforms or insignia. So when their fighters are killed either shot in a gun fight, bombed in the act of launching a rocket, or hit by a tank moving supplies to support other fighters Hamas claims them as “civilian deaths” when they are in fact fighters engaged in combat. Not many of the new media reports on this.

War is aweful. There was no reason for Hamas to start this except to gain leverage and unfortunately Kerry and Obama seem hell bent on caving into their demands. Basically, Hamas sacrificed 1000+ lives and lots of infrastructure just to get a seat at the table, to ask for $50 billion in reconstruction aid, a sea port, free transport of goods etc etc. Something they could have had through peace, ironically enough. But they get to have their cake and eat it too this way. Get all they want, and still get to shoot at and kill Jews and Israelis.
