Water Tower park to be renamed for Jane Byrne

The park surrounding Chicago’s historic Water Tower would be renamed “Jane M. Byrne Plaza” in honor of the former mayor under a proposal endorsed today by the City Council Finance Committee.

Aldermen set aside other proposed ways to honor Byrne after the former mayor’s daughter, Kathy Byrne, said the park idea was endorsed by her mother and family. The full council will vote Wednesday to honor a mayor who served from 1979 to 1983.

Why?

Was she an historic figure? She served only one term. Does she really merit this honor?

Just asking the question.

Byrne had a lot of problems but she started the revitalization of Chicago’s downtown. It’s hard to believe now but in the 1970s, downtown Chicago was a dead zone that nobody wanted to visit.

It’s a “first woman” thing. First female mayor of Chicago. Came just before the “first black” mayor of Chicago, Harold Washington. So, probably the blacks got something named for Washington and now the feminists want something named for Byrne. That’s how “group identity” politics work.

In Jayne Byrnes’ honor, several feet of snow will transported to the site every mid-January.
Tumbled in that snow will be several lawn chairs, futons, waste cans, traffic cones and sundry other “personal markers” indicative of neighborhood efforts to reserve space during snow storms.

It shall be ART!

I always thought her main accomplishment was being mayor while the “Blues Brothers” was filmed there.

Are you talking about the Blizzard of ‘79? That happened before she was elected. She was elected because of how badly Michael Bilandic handled it.

She did open the city to film making. Daley Sr. hated film crews and the disruption they caused so he never allowed it.

The Chicago library was renamed to honor Harold Washington.

That only the second time in history that a leader was saved by a severe winter. It put her in office. The first was Stalin in WW2.

I can't stand it when a politician is honored as being ‘first’ based on gender or race. Were it not for the voters they'd just be a woman/black/Asian/Indian running for office. If anyone is to be recognized, it should be the voters.

Closest DMV to me was named after an affirmative action state highway commissioner who all agree was a complete failure.

What ever happened to naming things after locals who died in service of their country. Used to be the politicians got a plaque and the hero got the honor. Now the hero gets a plaque and the politician takes the honor.

Jayne made an “executive decision” to push neighborhoods “down the priority pole” in snow emergencies.
She then threw a hissy when folks “reserved” spaces near their domiciles. It was Jayne who told Streets&San to simply ignore the “markers”

Jayne was a tyranical b*tch in addressing such emergencies because she was purely REACTIVE. She was never really seen as a friend of the citizen after that.

She learned well from Bilandic’s mistake. I first moved to the Chicago area in 1981, also a bad winter for snow. After one storm, streets in Evanston were a mess. But cross the city line into Chicago, and they were wide open everywhere.

Helps cover the fact that the person is a low quality politician and in most cases in over their head and has little to no possibility of growing into the job.
