A rare occurrence recently in the Pacific Ocean as more than 40 international naval ships joined together for a single photo shoot.

True, but it's also important to keep in mind that following the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the US was down to ONE functioning carrier in the Pacific, the USS Enterprise, and it was significantly damaged: A remarkable repair job while underway (returning to the Solomon Islands) allowed it to stay in action. Fortunately, the Japanese Navy had been severely degraded as well.

It might have been a movie, but I think it was an actual quote regarding the obvious outcome of WWII. Some German said something like “We shoot one of their planes down today. They send 10 more in it’s place tomorrow.”

That quote (Quantity has a quality all of its own) is most often attributed to Joseph Stalin when discussing the poor quality of Russian tanks.

And, frankly, he’s right. If I have 100 tanks, and you have 10, even if yours are superior, I’m likely win, just by sheer numbers. I’ll trade you 5 for 1, and still have half mine left.

Should hostilities once break out between Japan and the United States, it would not be enough that we take Guam and the Philippines, nor even Hawaii and San Francisco. To make victory certain, we would have to march into Washington and dictate the terms of peace in the White House. I wonder if our politicians (who speak so lightly of a Japanese-American war) have confidence as to the final outcome and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices.

That's not a threat ... it's a warning, to the power-hungry warmongers in Tokyo. Anybody with half a brain, and a grasp of reality, would have seen the utter idiocy of thinking that Japan could march on Washington and dictate terms.

Regrettably, too many men in positions of power in Tokyo had a poor grasp of reality.

Yes, at one point we were down to one carrier. The Big "E" would have been one of the most interesting assignments of the War.

Nimitz decided he needed a fighting admiral if we were to hold at Guadalcanal so he relieved Ghormley and put Halsey in command. It took guts, but he slugged it out with the Japanese even if it meant filling Iron Bottom Sound with wrecks. He stopped the Japanese dead in their tracks even if for a time we only had one operational carrier. Marine morale on the island soared knowing their commander was a fighter and the Navy had their back.

Yes, that is what Yamamoto was saying. Unless you think Japan has the ability to fight across the United States and take Washington, which of course was impossible, then you should not go war with America.
