As long as all countries involved get unfettered access to each others markets for all products, then you can call it 'free trade.'

The thing between China and the US is not free trade.

Germany has a point (although, this is mainly about continuing protectionism). The same provisions are in the NAFTA. The U.S.A. insisted on them, to protect American firms operating in Mexico. Turns out, they’ve mainly been used against the Canadian government.
